Job DescriptionThe Last Ten Kilometer (L10K) project—What it Takes to Improve Health Outcomes in Rural Ethiopia—has been implemented by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) through funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation since 2007.
The project has been striving to improve reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health (RMNCH) care behaviors and practices in four of the most populous regions of the country—Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP), and Tigray.
Based on the foundation’s guidance and the need to align with the Ethiopia Integrated Health Program (EIHP), the project was redesigned in 2017 in collaboration with the ministry of health (MOH) ad regional health bureaus (RHB) to address systemic barriers in line with its comparative advantage areas including community engagement, quality, equity, and information use.
Roles and Responsibilities
Attend training qualitative data collection including pilot-testing of the tools
Review and translate data collection guides
Master data collections using the digital audio recorders
Collaborate with team members to develop and submit an activity plan for data collection including a movement plan
Communicate and coordinate data collection activities in collaboration with
representatives of regional health bureaus, zonal health departments and woreda health offices
Report on any events and updates on data collection activities to the superiors
Interview and conduct focused group discussions using the guides and take field notes
Translate and transcribe verbatim of the interviews and focused group discussions
Code the transcriptions in collaboration with the researchers
Write and submit summary reports
Job Requirements
A minimum of MSc or MPH degree in public health, nursing, midwifery or other related clinical fields with a minimum of five years of experience in conducting qualitative researches as data collectors or assistant researcher
Proven experience of qualitative data collection including conducting in-depth interviews and focused group discussions
Good command of English & local languages of the region of assignment
Good understanding of the primary health care system particularly the health extension program and women development army strategy of Ethiopia
Availability for the whole data collection duration (for about 20 days starting from a 10 days after the announcement is aired)
Good interpersonal communication skills and building working relationships
