Organizational ContextThe Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is a work of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit order), incorporated as an international non-governmental organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.
The organisation was founded in November 1980 and now has a presence in over 50 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome. JRS works in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs.
Operational Context/ Role
The person is responsible for the development/improvement and delivery of teacher training and development initiatives (comprising a 15 week (150 hrs. in total) professional course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE), Early childhood education(ECE), and professional development workshops, consultation assistance, continuous learning and the provision of access to print and electronic teaching and learning resources) for refugee and host community teachers in Kakuma. The initiative aims to improve the quality of education in primary schools in Kakuma through the enhancement of ECD and primary teachers’ capacities.
Key Responsibility Areas:
Coordinate all teacher training and capacity building for teachers in the JRS Kakuma project;
To design collaboratively with partner institutions or improve curriculum for a 15-week Teacher Education CSLT;
Design Lesson plans, training materials (Audio Visual and print) for the ECD and PTE-CSLT;
Develop innovative curriculum-based content and resources, based on research;
Design an innovative teacher development activities and implement them appropriately;
Conduct regular in-house training for the incentive staff assigned to the department;
Together with the PTE Tutor, facilitate transparent and efficient recruitment process for refuges and host community members to participate in the teacher training and development program;
Facilitate examination registration and certification of the teacher student trainees;
Carry out teaching, ongoing assessment for the students admitted in the ECD and PTE-CSLT programme;
Maintain a detailed M&E reporting for the teacher training and development program;
Develop and maintain partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs, CBOs and other partners especially LWF, for service learning component of the PTE-CSLT;
May be required to support the Diploma students with onsite tutoring;
Participate in quarterly individual meetings and monthly cohort meetings with the PTE students;
Assist with recruitment, regular student meetings and special events for the Diploma Students;
Be involved in the creation and/or delivery of e-learning content;
Oversee and take responsibility for the development of appropriate projects related to the delivery of the teacher training curriculum and the whole teacher training and development initiative;
Any other duty assigned by the supervisor.
Reporting
Keep the JRS, donors and its partners informed on the activities of the project by providing relevant correspondence, reports and meeting minutes as well as by making regular contact.
Staff Planning and supervision
Plan and supervise the staff in the program;
Carries out people management and staff motivation with a view to upholding the JRS vision and mission.
Coordination and Liaison
Is involved in planning monitoring, implementation and evaluation, proposal writing and report;
In consultation with the JRS Kakuma PD monitor the progress of the tracks and diploma students to ensure adherence to set targets and agreed implementation time-frame and take follow up actions in conjunction with the Project Office;
Any other duty that the Project Director/Country Director may assign.
Skills Specification
Must have a Bachelor of Education Degree or a Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education;
2-3 years of teaching experience in primary, secondary or a tertiary institution;
Experience with teaching adults in multicultural environments or a willingness to learn;
Excellent computer skills, should be proficient in Office and Web Based applications;
Interest in program development;
Excellent communication (written and oral) and leadership skills;
Flexibility, resilience to stress and ability to adapt to working in remote areas with adverse climatic and weather conditions.
