Organizational ContextThe Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is ministry of the Society of Jesus, incorporated as an international non-governmental organization with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organization was founded in November 1980 and now has a presence in over 56 countries.
JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs.
The main services provided are in the field of education, reconciliation, livelihood activities and psychosocial support. Currently, more than 724,000 individuals are direct beneficiaries of JRS projects.
In Kenya, JRS has two projects: an urban refugee project in Nairobi focusing on Education and Livelihoods and field project in Kakuma Refugee Camp focusing on Education, Integrated psycho-social inclusive Education programme in Centers and Safe Shelters.
Project DescriptionJRS has chosen reconciliation as one of the four goals of its Strategic Framework for the years 2019 to 2023. Inspired by faith and the values of inclusiveness and solidarity, JRS seeks to understand and address the causes of structural inequality.
Like Sports4Peace, JRS works in partnership with others to create communities of justice, dialogue, peace, and reconciliation. JRS embraces sports as a useful tool in the process of reconciliation, emphasizing the need to recreate right relationships with self, individual, families, communities, and nations.
As a preliminary in the Sports4Peace project, JRS seeks to engage a Child safeguarding Facilitator to conduct a 1-day training sessions for 2 teams of Sports4Peace animators. The animators will then engage with children of different ages as part of the project implementation throughout the year.
To ensure a child friendly environment, all members of staff, volunteers, and other associates, including relevant partners, will receive training on child safeguarding.
This includes an introduction to the JRS child safeguarding policy and procedures, and guidance on how to recognise, respond to and report concerns about child abuse. In conjunction with the Sports4Peace implementation team, the Child safeguarding Facilitator will be responsible for teaching appropriate recreational and educational activities to Animators of the project.
Key Responsibilities:Facilitate a training on Child Safeguarding on 23rd and 30th of May targeting 20-25 participants.
Directed to orient and educate the animators on how to do activities with Children.
Communicate the main national
regulations on Child Safeguarding with an emphasis on the area of prevention of abuse.
Identify potential risks to children in all the project activities including workshops and events, plan mitigating measures and assign staff to be responsible for the implementation.
Develop capacity building plan for S4P animators to provide on-going mentoring and support.
Build the capacity of the Animators to deliver Child Safeguarding trainings, manage & undertake investigation.
Build the capacity of the animators especially in receiving and recording reports.
Competencies
Experience implementing Child safeguarding policies for at least 3 years.
Be open to learning about and working with special populations -refugees.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written, spoken, and presentational) skills. Proficiency in English and Kiswahili
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds with respect for diversity.
Upholding the Ethical Principles of delivery of service to clients
Qualifications
Preferable: University degree or a higher qualification in Women’s Studies, Humanitarian Assistance, Development, International Human Rights, Law, Social Work or Political Science.
A minimum of 1-2 years in Child Protection Activities preferred.
Experience of cross-cultural work (preferred).
Capacity to use one’s own initiative and to work collaboratively with others.
Demonstrated understanding of Protection Standards, SGBV, Key sectorial issues and processes including advocacy for protection.
Practical understanding of Child Protection issues and approaches in humanitarian contexts, including the constraints/risks and cultural sensitivities of work in Kenya.
A thorough understanding of the gender specific dynamics and protection issues
Desirable:
Experience working for/ with the Refugees.
Previous experience with a faith-based organizations and NGOs is an added advantage
