Job Description:

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic Church based non-governmental organization with a mission to accompany, serve and protect refugees and internally displaced persons–regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality.

The main areas of work are in the field of education, emergency assistance, livelihood and social services. JRS is a non - profit venture of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits’) that was established in 1980.

JRS works in more than 50 countries worldwide. It has committed itself in Ethiopia for more than a couple of decades helping refugees from all over Africa.

JRS Ethiopia is now recruiting a qualified Assistant Finance Officer based in its country office, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Assistant Finance Officer helps the Country Finance Officer in wide range of tasks including managing all cash transactions of the projects; producing and reporting periodical transactions and financial reports; manage payroll, pension fund, and petty cash; maintain all financial documents; as well as manage store and project assets. S/he reports to the Country Finance Officer.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Country Finance Officer in preparation of budget for JRS projects and periodical financial reports; monitoring of project offices’ as well as provision of technical supports for project finance staff
  • Preparing of updated reports on disbursements made by JRS projects, and advise the management on the overall financial status of the projects;
  • Making weekly cash reconciliation and Monthly bank reconciliation report;
  • Balancing the daily account at the end of each day; and checking the daily cash balances;
  • Making daily, weekly and monthly transaction reports to country finance officer;
  • Be responsible for payroll, pension fund, petty cash and payment vouchers administration;
  • Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information;
  • Maintain up to date fixed asset record and report to the Country Finance Officer on
    monthly basis;
  • Document financial transactions by entering account information;
  • Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options;
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, and other reports;
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents;
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information;
  • Secure financial information by completing database backups;
  • Maintain financial security by following internal controls;
  • Prepare payments by verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements;
  • Answer accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations in consultation with the Country Finance Officer;
  • Comply with JRS, federal and regional financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to the requirements, and advising management on needed action in collaboration with the Country Finance Officer
  • Prepare special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends;
  • Manage store and the country office’s assets in collaboration with other country office staff
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information and keep all financial, financial related and personal files in appropriate and chronological order;
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing other related tasks as needed

    Job Requirements

    Minimum Requirements

  • BA degree in Accounting and Finance Management.
  • Minimum of 4 (four) years of experience in similar or related positions
  • Good understanding of the financial and management processes
  • Experience in managing projects finance in NGO setting and volunteer to go field office
  • Knowledge on international and national accountancy and financial related procedures and standards
  • Knowledge with Ethiopian Tax and finance related laws and rules
  • Excellent command of English, both written and oral.
  • Excellent computer applications knowledge e.g. MS office is mandatory;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and cross-cultural sensitivity.
