Context and Scope

  • Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits both migrants and society in general.

  • The IOM mission in Uganda was established in 1988 and has since been supporting the Government to address migration challenges and building capacity of relevant stakeholders.

  • IOM implements a range of programmatic interventions in areas such as Refugee Resettlement; Emergency Response mostly for refugees from South Sudan and Democratic Republic of the Congo; Migration Health (Assessments and Promotion); Labor Migration and Human Development; Counter-Trafficking and Migrant Assistance; Immigration and Border Management; and Migration Governance, including policy and research.

    Responsibilities

  • Under the overall supervision of the Programme Coordinator and in close coordination of the Programme Assistant (DTM), successful candidate will support the Country office on the GIS related tasks:

  • Produce spatial analysis, maps and related information products from the migration data to support the DTM unit activities including support to Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM).


  • Assist the data unit by contributing to the design, development and systematic maintenance of a relevant spatial data infrastructure to facilitate management of the spatial data in the country.

  • Assist in maintenance of the IOM geo-database at national level to ensure the geo-database across is accurate, up to date and compatible.

  • Assist harmonising the spatial data used across the country by supporting the mission units with the standard geographic data and infographic and cartographic features.

  • Assist in ensuring that the standards are followed during the data collection by providing the necessary geographic data such as administrative units and locations
    Identify needs and advise on GIS/mapping tools and products.

  • Support engagement and liaison with IM/GIS focal point in the region to promote coordination and knowledge sharing.

  • Provide technical support and inputs into ongoing information management initiatives and partnerships in the mission.

  • Perform any other duties as may be required.

    Education

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree in geographic information systems, geography, computer science, or in other relevant discipline from an accredited academic institution with minimum three years of experience in GIS field.

    Experience

  • Detailed knowledge of spatial data management, cartographic design and spatial data visualization and analysis is required

  • Experience in the GIS/IM in the context of humanitarian response is preferred

    Skills

  • Proficiency in
    MS office, ArcGIS and one or more designing software is required;

  • Skills in Python, MS SQL Server and other MS programming tools are an advantage;

  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal relationship skills;

  • Hard working, good team player, dedicated, ability to monitor and follow up on pending matters; and

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure with minimum supervision.

  • Languages; – Fluency in English (oral and written) and some local Languages
