Background

Interpeace is an international organization for peacebuilding that supports locally led peacebuilding initiatives around the world.

Interpeace tailors its approach to each society and ensures that the work is locally driven. Together with local partners and local teams, Interpeace jointly develops peacebuilding programmes and helps establish processes of change that connect local communities, civil society, government and the international community.

Position within the Organization

The Team Leader is a senior member of the Programme Management Unit which manages and implements Interpeace’s active and ongoing programmes around the world.

The Sr Programme manager reports to the Country Representative and will explicitly work on the anticipated CSSF funded RESET project aimed at Building Resilience Against Violence Extremism in Kenya – Somalia borderlands.

The Team Leader will be a member of the project management team, the chair of the project coordination team, and directly responsible for the overall management and strategic leadership of the RESET project.

This includes high level track 1 engagement with donors and governments, as will as the strategic, programmatic and administrative oversight over the project delivery.

RESET Programme

RESET is a UK Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) funded programme which aims to foster individual, community and institutional resilience to counter violent extremism in the Kenya – Somalia border area.

It will have programme activities in the four border counties of Lamu, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera in Kenya as well as in the Gedo and Lower Juba regions in Somalia. Primarily, the RESET programme is expected to deliver on the following outputs:

  • Strengthen understanding of conflict, structures and actors to shape effective policy and programming.
  • Strengthen formal and informal mechanisms aiming to build resilience along the Kenya – Somalia border.
  • Address grievances and mitigate against drivers of instability and extremism.

    Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure high quality programming to achieve project results.
  • Provide technical leadership to ensure that the interventions have sound methodologies that are adapted to the cultural context and delivery the desired impact.
  • Provide overall advise and oversight to ensure that the project delivers change which can be sustain after the programme exist.
  • Take responsibility for the project cycle management.
  • Ensure that activities are delivered in line with workplans and available budgets.
  • Ensure high quality reporting within the deadline.
    Provide strategic leadership for the technical, programmatic and financial and administration teams.
  • Ensure that partners are meaningfully included in the project decision making and delivery and that they have the support to deliver all activities timely and to a high standard.
  • Represent the RESET project to donors, governments and in conferences and other speaking and representational events.

    Qualifications:

  • A degree in conflict studies/peacebuilding, international relations, anthropology, social geography, political science, development, management, or other
    relevant field.
  • Minimally 15 years’ experience working in peacebuilding and/or related fields in sub-Sahara Africa, including in senior management positions. Explicit work on CVE is an added advantage.
  • Minimally 5 years’ experience leading commercial contracts, preferably familiarity with UK AID contracts that have payment on delivery clauses.
  • Strong thematic knowledge on peacebuilding, resilience and CVE is an added advantage.
  • Strong contextual knowledge on the Kenya – Somalia border area is an added advantage.
  • Strong pre-existing networks in Kenya and Somalia is an added advantage.
  • Fluent in English, capacity to speak Swahili and Somali languages are an added advantage.

    Competencies

  • Demonstrates effectiveness and strong experience with short and long-term planning; financial, personnel and program management.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of project cycle management including using project planning and management tools
  • Knowledge of current thinking on peacebuilding issues and methods; and demonstrable ability to anticipate emerging needs and integrate them swiftly into priority programme setting
  • Developed ability of raising the profile of an organization, strategically networking with government agencies, donors and other international agencies, and using the media to generate profile
  • Proven ability to communicate, negotiate and work with high level executives and government officials.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment successfully and to demonstrate gender responsive and non-discriminatory behavior and attitudes.
  • Excellent ability to interact with people respectfully and with tact
  • Strong writing and communications skills in
  • English and French is required. Knowledge of local language is an advantage.
