Migration Health programme: IOM’s Migration Health programme in the Southern African region address the health needs of individual migrants as well as the public health needs of transit and host communities by assisting governmental and non-governmental partners in the development and implementation of relevant policies and programmes.

IOM Regional Office for Southern Africa is seeking to employ a Migration Health Programme Assistant to provide support to the implementation of the SRHR and HIV Knows No Borders (KNB) Phase.

The program seeks to improve sexual and reproductive health and HIV (SRH-HIV) outcomes and quality of life among young vulnerable people (YVP) aged 10 to 29 years, migrants and sex workers living in migration-impacted communities in Southern African region covering six countries, namely: Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia.

The programme is implemented by the IOM in partnership with Save the Children, ministries of health and local governments, and local NGOs in the respective countries. The programme coordinates with other relevant SRHR and HIV programmes in the region.

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Programme Coordinator (MH/SRHR) and in close coordination with the Regional Technical Specialist Migration Health (RTS), programme team and implementing partners, the incumbent will support implementation of the SRHR and HIV Knows No Borders programme activities in Southern Africa region, including participating in project implementation, monitoring, reporting and documentation of program results.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Support regular updating and development of external communication materials, including project fact sheets, IEC/SBCC tools, success stories and other promotional materials; and ensure they are technically sound prior to their distribution and dissemination.

  • Assist in the writing and
    review of technical project reports, drafting manuscripts for publication, editing of research concept papers and project proposals, and other publications.

  • Collect and systematically organize and analyze existing information from academic and governmental sources dealing with migration health to support the development of quality concept papers, presentations, technical guidance notes and information sheets;

  • Develop a database to track and describe existing national, regional and international recommendations, policies and strategies related to the management of migration health issues in Southern Africa.

  • Support the M&E Unit in the identification, and documentation of emerging best practices based on work done by IOM in migration and health, and IOM’s current response to health emergencies.

  • Support implementation of capacity building activities for country project teams and implementing partners so as to ensure full mainstreaming of SRHR, gender equality and migration into their institutional plans and policies.

  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    Education

  • University Degree in public health, medicine, migration health, social sciences or related field with three years experience OR

  • High School degree/certificate in the aforementioned field of study with five years of professional experience.

    Experience

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in working in public health, HIV and SRHR and livelihood programs focused on youth, adolescents and migrants, preferably within government, UN agencies, NGOs and Academia.

  • Basic documentation and reporting writing skills, facilitation/training skills, and good interpersonal skills.

  • Basic Knowledge and skills in computer use, particularly MS word and working knowledge of data analysis using STATA and SPSS.

    Skills

  • Working knowledge of the broad range of migration health such as development of IEC/SBCC tools, , human rights approaches to capacity building in SRHR and HIV programming.

  • Knowledge on operations research in public and knowledge translation

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure

    Required

  • Fluency in English is required (oral and written).

    Desirable

  • Working knowledge of IOM official languages will be an added advantage.
