What we doThe International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence.
We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law.
We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949.
We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.
We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Your role
In emergency and non-emergency situations, the Midwife guarantees access to quality reproductive health services for women in a defined geographic area, and/or ICRC supported health facilities.. She is a capacity-building interface between communities (local leaders, health staff, women's groups, etc.) and internal (ICRC) and external (Ministry of Health, NGOs, UN system, etc.) Stakeholders on health-related issues, also follows specific health-related issues, such as care for victims of violence, including sexual violence, within the ICRC's institutional and Health Strategy approaches.
Main Responsibilities
In collaboration with relevant hospital counterparts, assesses the quality of midwifery and reproductive health care
Identifies and prioritises the training needs for the local midwifery team
Proposes and delivers an evidence-based midwifery teaching programme in line with international standards
Monitors the results of the teaching programme and makes adjustments as necessary
In emergency and non-emergency situations, assesses, identifies and prioritizes the health needs of a given population
Proposes evidence-based strategies in line with international standards, institutional guidelines and delegation priorities
Implements, supports, and promotes relevant assistance responses (first aid, primary health care services, technical care, mobile health units, mental health and psychosocial support, management of mortal remains), monitoring and adjusting them as required
Promotes and supports an appropriate level of preparedness and timely response to emergencies
Ensures adherence to guidelines and international recommendations for obstetrical care and all other reproductive health activities including infection-control policies
Ensures safe access and continuum of care for targeted populations by linking health care levels, from community through primary to secondary level, and existing and functioning local systems and mechanisms (e.g. first responders, traditional birth attendant networks, the ICRC's health in detention or mental health and psychosocial support programmes)
Creates strong links and good channels of communication with community midwifery support to ensure post-natal and reproductive health continuum of care
Ensures regular stocks and delivery of medical supplies, in line with medical logistics guidelines
Supports ICRC staff and other personnel involved in the project/programme through training/mentoring
Contributes to report writing, gathering statistics and strategic planning discussions
Education and Experience
Bachelor´s degree in nursing/midwifery, or equivalent degree course of minimum 3 years
Registered nurse with a valid licence to practise in her country of residence
Nursing speciality degree (emergency room, operating theatre, intensSpecific qualification in midwifery
Minimum B2 level of English and French (both written and oral)
3-5 years´ experience in a hospital setting
2 years´ clinical experience post-speciality degree
Previous international humanitarian and/or development experience in low-income countries
Desired Profile and Skills
Sound knowledge of protocols and guidelines relevant to low-resource settings
Previous international humanitarian and/or development experience in low-income countries (NGO’s, IO or charity organization)
Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement
Our operational context
In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC dœs not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents)
In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license
