Institute for Security Studies Researcher, Training for Peace Jobs in Kenya



ISS Addis Ababa seeks a researcher to join its TfP team. The researcher will manage projects, coordinate stakeholder relationships, conduct research and support TfP’s training engagements. The researcher will report to the TfP Project Manager.

Overview of duties

  • Conduct policy research and analysis on human security issues

  • Write and disseminate research findings through appropriate formats

  • Assist the project leaders to develop training packages, conduct and facilitate training courses, and compile data for quality control, monitoring, evaluation and feedback on training workshops

  • Support monitoring and evaluation activities for projects

  • Help the project leaders execute administrative and logistical activities, such as event coordination, drawing up budgets, arranging meetings and internal ISS admin processes

  • Network and liaise with stakeholders to build ISS’ profile, shape decision making and ensure engagement with research results

  • The contract is until 31 December 2024 and may be renewed subject to ISS’ requirements, funding and satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.

    Overview of requirements

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in social sciences, political science, international relations or a related field

  • At least five years’ relevant work experience in the field of African Peace and Security Architecture, preferably
    with a focus on gender, peace operations and peacebuilding at the AU and the RECs

  • Experience in developing training materials and supporting, delivering and facilitating training

  • Track record of relevant single-authored publications, media commentary and public speaking at international forums

  • Strong networking, interpersonal and communication skills, in particular the ability to work with the AU, RECs, governments and civil society

  • Understanding and experience in monitoring and evaluation

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Strong skills in written and verbal French will be an advantage

  • Ability to travel extensively

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
