Background

The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) is an African institution with the mission to promote peace and security in Ethiopia and Africa through education, research, and professional development.

The Institute produces skilled professionals in conflict prevention, management and resolution as well as in peacebuilding, and promotes the values of a democratic and peaceful society.

IPSS would like to recruit two Research officer consultants for its Research and Policy Analysis Unit of the African Peace and Security Programme (APSP).

Objective

The general objective of the post is to provide overall assistance to the activities of the research and policy analysis department.

Number of positions needed:

Contract Duration

6 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance.

Job Requirements

Core tasks and responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the Head of the Research and Policy Analysis Unit, the Research Officers will:

Provide overall support to the management and coordination of the research department;

Provide input for the development of work plans, background papers, concept notes, reports, and other materials;

Contribute to the publication

and dissemination of research projects of the department;

Review literature relevant to the Afsol Journal and edit manuscripts submissions;

Making arrangements for workshops, meetings, training; and

Engage in any other activities related to the African Peace and Security Programme (APSP) as assigned by the respective supervisor

Qualifications and experience

MA in social sciences, preferably in peace and security studies, political science, global studies, development studies or any other related field of study

Excellent knowledge of the African development landscape in the field of peace and security

Very good knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research methods

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

2-3 years of work experience in similar research activities

High academic performance is an added advantage

Competencies and skills

Adaptability and flexibility to work on a wide range of tasks

Ability to manage various priorities

Ability to work under pressure

Experience of the journal and academic editing

Highly organized and capable of operating with minimal supervision;

Self-motivated, adaptable and flexible.
