BackgroundThe Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) was established in 2007 with a task of offering quality education and capacity training in the specialised field of peace and security to students and other stakeholders, as well as foster peace and security through research, dialogue and other outreach activities in Ethiopia, the greater Horn of Africa and across Africa.
The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) hosts the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) e Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Post Conflict Societies. The main objective of the CoE is to facilitate and advance education and training, and African-led research knowledge generation and dissemination in conflict prevention, management, and post-conflict reconstruction and development by providing a platform for learners and educators at national, regional, continental and global levels.
For this purpose, the Centre partners with Makerere University (Uganda), the University of Ibadan (Nigeria), the University of Nairobi (Kenya), The Centre has secured a fund for three years which will be utilised for research and capacity development of PhD and post-doc students in the hub and spoke model and is preparing to operationalize the programme. Hence, the Centre would like to hire a project officer who will be responsible for undertaking the day to day activities of the Center and managing the project.
Objective
The project manager will support the operations of the project and effective management of the COE for Post-Conflict Societies.
Tasks and Deliverables
Provide overall support to the management and coordination of the CoE;
Develop work plans, background papers, concept notes, reports and other materials relevant to the Center;
Design projects and proposal in line with the objectives of the CoE
Support to plan, design and deliver project activities following the CoE Operations Manual
Monitor changes to
the project scope, schedule and costs and report or escalate to the unit directors as needed
Develop and maintain a sound network of government and other stakeholder counterparts
Monitor the implementation of the project activities and budget utilization among the partner institutions for the hub and spoke model project
Actively contribute to engagement area reporting systems
Undertake a range of administrative duties and tasks that may reflect substantial variety and complexity
Monitor the timelines for all donor action such as prior approval, continuation application etc.
Prepare donor requirements package by driving and participating in the process with the relevant stakeholders
Develop and maintain working relationships with donors, partners and other stakeholders
Liaise with implementing partners to ensure the delivery of outputs
Support the development of proposals on a need basis as proposal manager
Engage and network with various stakeholder, building relationships to advance the objectives of the CoE
Solicit grants and mobilise resource to support the implementation of the Centre’s activities
Provide logistical and administrative support for the CoE
Organize events, workshops, meetings, and training
Undertake other activities as required by the Head of the CoE.
Job Requirements
Qualification and Experience
Minimum second degree in Political Science, Global Studies, Peace and Security Studies, Development Studies or any other related field of fields;
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of post-conflict societies;
At Least 2 years of demonstrable experience in partnership management, fundraising strategies and resource mobilization;
Excellent project proposal and report writing skills and previous experience in project management activities.
Strong administrative, organizational and communications skills;
Confident use of IT systems and packages, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); and
Fluent in written and spoken English
Duration
One-year full time with the possibility of extension
