The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Technical Assistant to provide general support to research activities to the laboratory service units (Mycotoxin and Nutritional platform, Plant Growth Facility and Central core)
ILRI works to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 11 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, ILRI has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
Key Responsibilities
Mycotoxin and Nutrition platform support
Provide support in sample handling.
Sample preparation by grinding/milling and drying using various equipment
Cleaning and dusting of specialized equipment work benches and consumables.
Perform any other tasks as assigned.
Plant growth facility support
Prepare soil and soilless growth media mix and sterilization for use in propagating tissue culture plantlets.
Monitor pest and disease incidences through regular scouting of the plant growth facility and with supervision of greenhouse supervisor to perform chemical sprays.
Clean and disinfect potting/ labelling materials.
Work with green house users in disposing waste at the end of their project.
Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.
Central Core support
Collection and washing of used glassware.
Sterilization of glassware, media, buffer solutions and laboratory
waste.
Issuance of consumables to lab users.
Collect and clean PPEs using laboratory dedicated laundry machines and return the PPEs to designated locations in various labs.
Maintain high standards of hygiene in specialized labs such as Radioisotope, BSL2/3 conversion lab and biorepository areas.
Requirements
Kenya certificate of secondary education
Basics in biosafety and First Aid Training.
Ability to communicate effectively, work independently with minimum supervision and productively in a multidisciplinary, multicultural team.
Terms of Appointment
This position is at job level HG 8 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances.
