ILRI Research Officer – Climate-Smart Agriculture Policy Specialist Kenya Jobs

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer – Climate-Smart Agriculture Policy Specialist to support issues of policy and enabling environment for climate smart agriculture in East Africa.

The specialist will work in collaboration with other members of the CSA project team, which includes staff from all project partners contributing expertise to the implementation of this project.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

The position;

Farmers, crop traders and consumers in east Africa are affected by climate variability and change, with negative impacts on livelihoods and food security.

To address this challenge, a new project funded by the Dutch Government on Climate-Smart Agriculture will be implemented in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The project is implemented by the CGIAR research program Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security in East Africa (CCAFS EA) that is hosted by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), in cooperation with SNV Netherlands Development Organization, Wageningen University and Research, Agriterra and Rabo Partnership.

The project will provide an opportunity to farmers to adapt their farming activities and minimize the negative effects of climate change by adopting smart sustainable intensification practices in arable farming, thereby contributing to increased availability of safe and affordable food for the growing population. It will promote market driven adoption and scaling of inclusive climate-smart business developments that will enhance climate resilience throughout agricultural value chains.

The project interventions will be at the levels of farming systems, selected commodity value chains, agro-industries, and the wider institutional environment.

Sound inclusive business cases for climate smart food production and climate-proof agribusiness development are the main ways of undertaking the activities.
