The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate to provide support to the research projects of forests, trees and agroforestry and climate change, agroforestry and food security on estimation, mitigation and adaptation of climate change at Mazingira centre.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.
It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
Responsibilities
In charge of environmental sample organization (soils, plants, manure, gases)
Oversight and responsibility of core analytics in the soil laboratory (C/N, mineral N and P, texture)
To contribute to the development of new laboratory protocols and method development for measuring various environmental variables
To demonstrate practical procedures during training courses, to explain work instructions and to adapt general methods and procedures to meet the needs of the projects
To operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment such C/N analyzer, gas chromatographs, microplate readers and laser-absorption spectrometers linked to ongoing research projects
To ensure that laboratory areas are fully functional
To record and interpret results to be communicated with colleagues and other project members and to perform laboratory data quality checks
To use computers to process data for the preparation of graphs and statistical tests (Microsoft Office and a graphic program is a prerequisite)
To keep up to date with technical developments in the laboratory, especially those which can save time and improve reliability of measurements
To follow and ensure strict laboratory safety procedures and safety checks
To oversee casual staff and other laboratory members whom are working on existing analytical instruments
Assist with invoicing on samples analysis to external partners
Requirements
MSc in Environmental Sciences or related discipline
Detailed knowledge in environmental analytics (i.e. gas chromatography, soil nutrient analysis, etc), their functioning, maintenance and troubleshooting
Fundamental knowledge on environmental
experiments in the laboratory and field
Ability to manage small teams consisting of casual workers and Mazingira research assistants
Experience with essential data quality control and data quality assurance procedures
Conversant with Microsoft Office and a graphic program
Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.
It is open to Kenyan nationals only.
The position is on a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Job Level
This position is job level 2D Level 3, and ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances for ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff.
