The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Fellow to support the “Resilient Cities Research Initiative”, part of the new One CGIAR research portfolio. The initiative will work to further our understanding of the human health risks from urban markets in low- and middle-income countries and to design interventions to upgrade informal markets and make them better sources of safe and nutritious foods as well as livelihoods.

We are looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist who will design field research activities and conduct data analysis to support the identification of successful intervention programs to improve food safety and human health, as well as support the design of epidemiological studies in a range of countries.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Play a lead role in ILRIs research in the Resilient Cities through Sustainable Urban and Peri-urban Agri-food Systems project under the supervision of the PI. Activities include:

  • Design and implementation of field surveys to be conducted in Kenya, Ethiopia and in other countries.

  • Data analysis and interpretation.

  • Supervision and coordination of teams involved in projects under the resilient cities initiative.

  • Write up of research outputs (incl. scientific reports, peer-reviewed publications, briefs)

  • Supervision of junior staff, including research assistants and research fellows.

  • Contribute to the development of research questions and proposals that address issues of relevance to urban food systems in the Global South.

  • More generally contribute to the functioning of the Animal and Human Health group, providing scientific leadership and supervision to junior researchers and fellows primarily based in Nairobi (Kenya) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).

  • Contribute to other food safety, food systems and One Health projects as needed.

  • Contribute to the development of resource mobilization proposals as appropriate

    Requirements

  • Kindly attach PhD in agriculture, veterinary medicine, nutrition, public health, epidemiology, or related field

  • Proven experience with data management and analysis.

  • Experience in writing reports and research publications

  • Proven experience with data management and analysis using a range of statistical software (e.g. STATA, R)

  • Experience working in low- and middle-income countries would be an advantage.

  • Evidence of strong quantitative analytical skills

  • A good track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. Evidence of publication of other type of research outputs would be an advantage (e.g. reports, blogs, op-eds)

  • Excellent command of English. Knowledge of another language would be an advantage.

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and cultural contexts
