The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a post-doctoral scientist to contribute to model development and quantitative foresight modeling related to national and global livestock sector analyses.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa (www.ilri.org).
Key responsibilitiesConduct sector level quantitative livestock systems analysis with a focus on herd dynamics, feed availability and use, climate change, and land use
Conduct livestock sector and national level economic and policy analysis
Contribute to ongoing model development to (a) improve the livestock sector quantification in a national/global economic model; and (b) enhance the ex-ante (environment, income, nutrition, gender) impact functionalities of a national/regional, spatial multi-market partial equilibrium model
Support the development and implementation of national livestock master plans (https://www.ilri.org/livestock-master-plans) with quantitative livestock systems analysis
Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and other relevant communication products
Contribute to proposal writing to raise additional resources for policy and foresight research.
Perform any other related duties as may be assigned
Requirements
PhD. in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a closely related field
Relevant post-Ph.D. experience with strong economic modeling skills will be considered
Expertise (required) in foresight/ex-ante economic impact quantitative agricultural/livestock sector analysis.
Strong skills in partial/general equilibrium analysis using GAMs
Experience in climate change or environmental quantitative analysis
Track record of engagement in peer-reviewed publications
Familiarity with the context of livestock systems and sectors in developing countries
Experience using econometric software such as STATA and R is an advantage
Relevant professional certification
Excellent written and spoken English
Good interpersonal and communication
skills and ability to work well with a team
Experience working in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams
Proven ability to work within strict deadlines
Proven ability to work independently
Ability to travel extensively to regional and international locations
Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya
Terms of Appointment
This position is at job level HG 16. The position is a 2-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances
