3. ILRI Field Coordinator Jobs in Turkana County, Kenya


The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Field Coordinator for Turkana County, Feed the Future (FtF) – Accelerated Value Chain Development – Livestock Component (AVCD-LC) to contribute to coordination of field activities in collaboration with partners including county governments and other United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded projects under the Partnership for Resilience and Economic Growth (PREG).

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

The position

As part of a larger USAID-funded agriculture development program ILRI is leading a project to accelerate the impact of livestock market interventions on household incomes, with the goal to reduce poverty and hunger in five counties in Northern Kenya (Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana and Wajir).

The focus is on taking successful interventions to scale to achieve broad impact on agricultural incomes and nutrition, through delivering several outputs. Firstly, facilitating respective counties and other actors/stakeholders to create supportive policy environment and legislative frameworks to enhance market performance and create awareness on how actors (pastoralists, traders etc.) can benefit from these frameworks, including advocating for further changes in policies and legislation to address emerging challenges, in addition to enhancing market vibrancy by promoting entrepreneurial skills among women and youth and linking them to appropriate financial institutions as well as increasing availability and use of market information systems.

Secondly, enhancing livestock value chain through improvement in the availability of and access to fodder and forage, through supporting the respective counties to develop appropriate policies and legislation in rangeland management, improved surveillance and control of diseases for increased livestock production and trade, promotion of Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in animal health care delivery and enhancement of productivity through better herd management aimed at equipping pastoralists with hands-on skills and knowledge in selection and breeding; and Thirdly, improving accesses to diverse and quality food and change in nutrition related behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate field activities aimed at increasing pastoralist livestock productivity and market linkages (through increased access to inputs and services as well as uptake of productivity enhancing technologies), working closely with development partners and the Turkana county government ministry/department.
  • Establish and manage stakeholder relationships that improve the ability of the team to achieve the agreed outputs and outcomes.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate implementation of project activities.
  • Support project monitoring activities.
  • Undertake preparation of regular reports on project field activities.

    Requirements

  • Master’s degree in
    livestock production, animal health, development studies, project management or rangeland ecology/ management with experience in implementing development projects or a Bachelor’s degree in any of the above mentioned areas with a minimum of 5 years’ experience implementing development projects.
  • Field experience in implementation of livestock development projects in the Kenyan ASALs – especially in the area of livestock husbandry, animal health, livestock production and farmer/pastoralists’ market linkages.
  • Demonstrated experience working in collaborative development projects involving multiple partners and including good understanding of both National and County Government programs and processes under the State Department of Livestock.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordination of field activities and supervision of field staff.
  • Proven experience in program management and monitoring & evaluation.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Good interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills especially to diverse audience and targets.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment and foster teamwork.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to take initiatives.

    Terms of appointment

    This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based in Turkana County. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 1.5 year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

    Job level

    This position is job level 2D, and ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances for ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff.
