ILRI Bones and Horns Value Chain Analysis Jobs Opportunities in Kenya
IntroductionILRI works to improve food and nutrition security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.
Scope of work
Conduct a bones and horns value chain analysis (VCA), exploring constrains and opportunities along the value chain
Train and incubate at least two groups and at least five individuals in every AVCD county on bone marrow and fats harvesting from bones, and production of bones, horns and teeth crafts, laying special focus on end market requirements
Facilitate one (1) national B2B forum in Nairobi which will bring together different actors involved in bones, horns, and teeth value chain in the five AVCD counties and end market players. This forum will be expected to create a forum where value chain actors can establish business relationships (backward and forward linkages) and building collaboration and partnership that can culminates into deal cutting / signing of contracts
Final Products
Bones and horns value chain analysis report: This will capture actors, constraints, opportunities and end market requirements, including export destinations.
Training packages in form of manual, brochures, flyers etc: These will contain market related information and specifications from different stratified market to be disseminated to the supply side actors. These messages will cover the different product lines: Jewelleries, ornaments among others. Two groups and at least five individuals trained in each AVCD county: These trainees should be able to make various by products from bones and horns (e.g. Soap, well-polished ornaments) as per the end market specifications.
Final report: The final report will document the methodology, lessons learnt, value of contracts signed (if any), conclusions and recommendations. Recommendations should be specific and feasible.
Qualifications
Bachelor in Commerce and Master’s Degree in business development and/or Entrepreneurship. A specialization in business development is highly desired
At least 5 years’ experience working in business administration and/ or advising business ventures, as a way of upgrading value chains, through value addition.
Experience in Kenyan extensive livestock sector is highly desirable
Proven track record of previous similar assignments and value chain analysis
Demonstrable skills in business incubation, especially linking rural based SMEs to end markets, including export.
Master’s degree in socio-economics- agricultural economics/ Food science and or related discipline or Bachelor’s degree in socio-economics- agricultural economics/ Food scientist and or related discipline with at least 5 years’ experience in the livestock and livestock products trade.
At least 5 years’ experience in Kenya livestock development dynamics and livestock trade
Demonstrable experience in pastoral systems and their socio-economic dynamics
Proven track record carrying meeting/workshop facilitation

Clean guest rooms and make beds
Replenish guest supplies and amenities and maintain minimum stock levels of guest supplies, cleaning materials and ensuring proper and correct usage
Collect, wash and return guest laundry to guest rooms
Assist guests with luggage

Cooking for guests (breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea break)
Maintenance of the farm house

Qualifications
Diploma in housekeeping or relevant fields

ILRI Research Asistant Jobs Opportunities in Kenya
Responsibilities
Responsible for the health and welfare of the 8 trial herds (sheep, goats, cattle, camels)
Day-to-day monitoring of the study animals
Daily monitoring of the herd in general and according to the research protocol in particular (tempertures, blood samples, swabs etc)
Carry out postmortem (PM) when necessary
Responsible for vaccinations of the herds as per protocol
Responsible for sample taking in close collaboration with research partners and supervisors
Daily record keeping (as per protocol)
Reporting (as per protocol)
Assisting during sample processing in the laboratory
Carry out veterinary duties where required
Qualifications
BSc degree in veterinary science

ILRI Laboratory Manager Jobs Opportunities in Kenya
Responsibilities
Oversee the management of the laboratory infrastructure, which will include the procurement, servicing and maintenance of a huge variety of state-of-the art analytical instruments such as laser absorption spectroscopes, gas-chromatographs, near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS) and other instrumentation, wet chemistry laboratory instruments used in field and laboratory research at ILRI.
Oversee the develop of laboratory protocols for processes and equipment, programming of equipment.
Develop and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for environmental and bioscience projects.
Keep abreast with new technologies and advise on the suitability, acquisition and implementation of any new procedures or equipment.
Manage external requests for sample analysis in terms of planning according to laboratory capacity and generate the necessary invoices.
Supervise laboratory technicians to build their technical capacity in order to meet highest analytical standards.
Work with other internal units to ensure quality and timely outputs. Provide support to facilities at Kapiti and in BioSciences, in the management of high-precision analytical equipment.
Qualifications
5 years’ work experience in a state of the art environmental or bio-science laboratory working with and maintaining analytical instruments such as laser absorption spectroscopes, gas-chromatographs, and near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS).
The ability to independently plan, design and implement experiments both in the laboratory and out in the field.
Solid knowledge of international best practice for laboratory procedure and protocols, maintenance of analytical equipment, sample analysis, data management and data curation.
Experience in micro-meteorological measuring techniques.
Experience with statistical software such as R, Python and/or Matlab and laboratory programs such as Labview.
Proven ability to supervise and train technical officers and provide necessary quality control.
Excellent written and spoken English.
Experience managing laboratory finances and budgets.
The ability to effectively communicate in a multicultural context.
The ability to collaborate with technicians and scientists from other disciplines (animal nutrition, ecology, sociology, economy etc.) in an interdisciplinary and multicultural team.
