The PositionThe International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer I to support the research portfolio of the animal and human health program, with emphasis on zoonosis and food safety work in various ways.
The job holder will provide essential input to desk and field activities for a range of projects, enabling their implementation and completion.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.
It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.
Main Responsibilities
Plans, executes and coordinates field work activities within and outside Addis Ababa, according to the needs of different projects.
These include, but not restricted to interviews, designs field work protocols, preparing and administering questionnaires, running focus group discussions, workshops and biological sampling;
Develops and conducts training of enumerators and field technicians on various data collection techniques including use of electronic systems such as ODK, and develops work-plans and budgets for field activities and field staff;
Coordinates project and stakeholder meetings, seminars, workshops and other learning events;
Undertakes literature
reviews within the scope of different projects, and develops outputs from these, as required;
Manages datasets (surveys, secondary data) and conducts statistical analysis, processes and synthesizes secondary household and regional data as required by the team;
Contributes to development of peer reviewed publications and report writing, and managing of references, as part of ongoing and upcoming team projects;
Editing and/transcribing reports, manuscripts, proposals and other documents;
Supports the development of extension materials derived from project work (briefs, brochures);
Contributes to the development of materials in support of research proposal application;
Any other responsibilities that will be assigned by supervisor and or/management.
Academic and professional qualifications:
Education:
Master`s degree in agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, epidemiology, human health or a related discipline will be mandatory
Experience
Three years work experience in relevant research projects, including both desk and field work activities.
Skills
Research communication skills or experience with communication and popularization of scientific outputs
Skills and experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods and analysis
Good command of at least one statistical software (STATA, R, or similar) and experience conducting statistical analyses
Proven experience on scientific writing (MSc thesis, publications, contribution to reports)
Collaborative skills, ability to work in multi-cultural teams, excellent oral and written communication skills (English)
Good command of written and spoken English
