The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Scientist – Epidemiology to support ILRI’s growing activities in risk assessment and risk management in informal markets and value chains as well as improving control of transboundary animal diseases.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock.
It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.
Responsibilities:
Co-ordinate day to day activities of one or more large foodborne disease epidemiology research projects. Be responsible for planning, reporting and budget.
Publish extensively in peer reviewed international journals documenting outputs and outcomes from a suite of impact assessments.
Conduct targeted research and create opportunities for cross centre, flagship and project learning.
Develop a research agenda around Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and contribute to research agenda on food safety, transboundary animal disease, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), animal health service delivery and strengthening state veterinary services.
Supervise students and consultants in implementation of research.
Participate in resource mobilization activities including donor relations and proposal development.
Requirements:
Veterinary degree; PhD in veterinary epidemiology; qualifications in veterinary public health and management are an advantage.
Research track record with documented ISI publications on food safety in informal markets in Africa.
Experience with leading field research on transboundary livestock disease (ideally FMD) with associated publications.
Working with working for or in state veterinary services an advantage.
Worked a minimum of two years in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).
A minimum of six
years since veterinary qualification.
Leadership positions is an advantage.
Position level:
The position level is 4C
Duration:
3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
