The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a consultant to work part time to coordinate its work on the Global Livestock Advocacy for sustainable Development (GLAD) project in Nairobi, Kenya.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutrition security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Background

The consultant will engage with a wide range of stakeholders and engage key regional and international policy and development processes.

Internally the person will coordinate across multiple scientific disciplines and work closely with ILRI’s communication and knowledge management experts.

The consultant supports work on distilling and presenting evidence on sustainable livestock and its development impacts, convening and engaging stakeholders in high-profile events, reaching out through media, and facilitating a global community of practice for people engaged in these efforts.

We look for someone who understand how investment decisions are shaped, how global and regional policy processes can be engaged, and the best ways to bring evidence into strategy development

Scope of work

Policy process engagement and influencing – on sustainable livestock

Targeted engagement with investor and partners as well as alliance-building and networking

Ensuring good documentation of insights and learning, and wide dissemination of outputs
Project coordination, monitoring, planning, and team management

Essential skills and qualifications

  • 10 or more years of professional experience in a related
    field plus postgraduate degree
  • Skilled in engaging and influencing a range of partners and decision makers in the agriculture and development arenas
  • Experience in development agenda-setting/influencing processes
  • Thorough understanding of sustainable livestock and/or agriculture in developing countries
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multicultural settings
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
