Context and Background

The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) is an independent non-profit organization that combines innovative research, market systems development, and strategic partnerships to spread sustainable agricultural solutions for improved soil health, food security, and livelihoods around the world.

"Building Resilience and Inclusive Growth of Highland farming systems for rural Transformation"(BRIGHT) will target over 100,000 Ugandan highland households in Kigezi, Mt Elgon, and Rwenzori regions, building project interventions from the ground up that are based on the aspirations and needs of targeted farming households and communities.

BRIGHT seeks to build the resilience capacity of farm households and the farming systems to recover from external shocks in an ever-changing context through absorption, adaptation, and transformation and, in so doing, increase incomes and food and nutritional security of all farmers, from subsistence-oriented farm households to more market-oriented ones.

The proposed project aims to achieve the following main impacts:

  • Increased resilience, nutritional outcomes, and income for smallholder farm households; and

  • Increased eco-efficient farming, making sustainable use of and protecting natural resources

    IFDC is seeking recruitment for Nutrition Field Officer for this project to be based in the main project office of Fort Portal(1), the field offices of Kabale(1) & Mbale(1).

    Position Summary

  • The Nutrition Field Officer will be responsible for rolling out training components and behavior change campaign materials related to nutrition at the household and community level, including hygienic food preparation and storage and the importance of dietary diversity.

  • He/she will also participate in the development and refinement of training modules and SBCC materials based on learnings and developments in the local context under the leadership of the Nutrition lead.

  • The Nutrition Field Officer will also be responsible for carry out nutrition situational assessments in the inception phase of the project.

    Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Lead the local implementation of nutrition status surveys and disseminate findings to relevant stakeholders

  • Support the Nutrition Lead to develop the nutrition strategy for the project

  • Provide local context to the design and adaptation of nutrition training materials social behavior change communication materials for different audiences including communities, farmer groups, households and subsistence and market-oriented farmers.

  • Conduct the roll out of the nutrition training program through lead farmers and local partners

  • Conduct the roll out of the social and behavior change communication (SBCC) campaigns and demonstrations around nutrition and dietary practices, including kitchen gardens, cooking demonstrations, and media messaging

  • Coordinate with other project officers to ensure integration of nutrition approaches with household visioning and planning exercise and climate smart agricultural training program on promoting crop diversification and nutritional values.

  • Link with existing nutrition structures at sub county and district level to ensure coordination and maximum outreach of activities.

  • Create synergies with other nutrition programs/projects including DIETS to ensure maximum impact of activities and better awareness of and access to nutrition services within the project areas.

    Supervision
    and Team Collaboration


  • The Nutrition Field Officer is supervised by and reports to the Nutrition Lead. She/ he works in close collaboration with project colleagues, other IFDC staff and colleagues from other consortium members.

    Position and Duty Station

  • The Nutrition Field Officer is a national position with a duty in the IFDC main project office in Fort Portal (1), the field offices of Mbale(1) & Kabale(1).

  • The position requires intensive field travels (up to 90% of the time) in the target region in Uganda.

    Required Experience

  • Degree in nutrition, food science, household economics or related fields

  • At least 3 years professional experience in implementing projects in the nutrition sector with a focus on: early childhood nutrition, promotion and inclusion of enhanced household nutrition and dietary diversity

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in leading the development and implementation of nutrition strategies to improve dietary diversity and household resilience.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with a good working knowledge of the second language.

  • Good planning skills, honest and reliable.


  • Ability to work alone and in a team.

  • People management skills

  • Willingness to work in the field on a daily basis and travel on a motorcycle

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally in small audience and large audience settings.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required, proficiency in multiple local languages is an asset.
