Job DescriptionAbout the organizationThe IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative builds ambitious public private coalitions of companies, civil society organizations and governments to oversee high-impact programs that directly benefit people, planet and profit.
With co-funding from the Dutch, Swiss and Danish Governments, as well as from business partners, IDH organizes public private partnerships in 11 commodity sectors such as coffee, tea, apparel, cotton and palm oil.
Similarly, IDH also builds sustainable governance models across tropical forest regions, or landscapes and operates in many countries worldwide, including Ethiopia where it currently running a sustainable landscape program at Lake Ziway.
IDH is a dynamic organization with app. 200 staff, of which 70 are based in Utrecht, the Netherlands and the balance in hubs in Asia and Africa.
In the last year IDH has expanded its activities and now runs around 600 projects in 50 countries, together with a wide range of private and public partners.
IDH is looking to support the sustainable development of the Textile Industry in Ethiopia by recruiting a:
Senior Program Manager - Sustainable IndustrializationThis role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Position OverviewThe labour intensity of the textile industry makes it an ideal vehicle for industrialization. However, the rapid development of Industrial Parks and the urbanization that accompanies it, also have profound implications for living and working conditions of the workers, as well as for the environment.
The Senior Program Manager for Sustainable Industrialization (SPM-SI) is responsible for providing the leadership and development of IDH’s Sustainable Industrialization program in Ethiopia.
It is IDH’s contention that long-term social and environmental sustainability is best achieved when sustainability improvements go hand-in-hand with private sector profitability.
The SPM will leverage this dynamic by partnering with both private and public sectors working in the Ethiopian textile industry and the Industrial Parks.
The SPM-SI will design and lead2-3 collaborative initiatives directly related to sustainable industrialization, that will have a tangible impact.
He/she will do this by establishing Public-Private Platforms to coordinate and align multiple, diverse stakeholders including Federal and Regional Governments, Municipal Authorities, major Donors and the Private Sector.
He/she will then help IDH’s partners to deliver the well-defined goals of the highly-focused initiatives. Finally, the SPM-SI will look to scale and disseminate best practice throughout the national network of Industrial Parks and their hinterlands.
The SPM-SI will be a key team member of the broader IDH team in Ethiopia as well as globally, as part of Global Manufacturing practice.

Key Responsibilities Recruit and develop team: It is IDH’s intention to grow the Sustainable Industrialization team in Ethiopia. The SPM-SI is responsible for helping secure funding, recruiting and training new staff.
IDH representation: Represent IDH to all relevant stakeholders as an effective, neutral and reliable partner.
Governance: Responsible for establishing the overall governance framework for relevant Public-Private platforms.
Partnerships: Engage with new, or potential, partners who have a role to play in the development of the Textile Industry in the country, including companies, NGOs, donors, researchers and others.
Strategy and planning: Work closely with key stakeholders to develop the objectives and goals of chosen initiatives. Agree the action plans and timelines. Take a leadership role to convene the key stakeholders, organize meetings, set agenda, circulate minutes and ensure follow up.
Coordinate with Government: Work closely with the EIC, IPDC and EFCCC and other
relevant Federal bodies to ensure strong engagement and leadership from Ministers and their teams.
Similarly, work closely with the relevant Regional Governments and Municipal Authorities.
Align with the Private Sector and Civil Society Organizations: Utilize the expertise of the Buyers, their Suppliers and the major Donors, to leverage the inter-dependence of sustainability and economic competitiveness. Additionally, explore strategic directions and solutions for industry (e.g. World Bank and UN studies) with a view to practical implementation and tangible results.
Convene and moderate a Public-Private Platform: specifically, the SPM-SI will moderate a Public-Private platform consisting of global textile brands, international manufacturers, Government Ministries and leading CSOs, as a forum for strategic dialogue and driving defined projects.
Financial management and fundraising: Responsible for business development, including identifying potential funders, developing proposals for those different funders and developing a sustainable funding structure. Also responsible for managing a financial plan and overseeing the annual budget.
Communication: Draw up and execute the communication plan for sustainable industrialization and help develop the local “IDH branding”. Actively share information on and promote the efforts and outcomes, which includes developing brochures, website and reports. Represent IDH in national and international events.

Requirements
Demonstrated success of effectively leading change and organizational growth, from strategic planning through to the delivery of tangible results
Evidence of skilled process management and program management
Master’s Degree level, ideally in relevant disciplines like development economics, industrial development, business management, social sciences, natural sciences
At least 8-10 years’ experience in the scope of work of IDH and/or the private sector
Consulting license or accreditation by a professional body in Ethiopia or overseas
Neutrality to the extent that there is no factual or perceived conflict with the interests of key stakeholders
Track record in raising funding for sustainable development work
Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills in Amharic and English
Good knowledge of the structure and way of working of the Ethiopian Government
Demonstrable personal authority/credibility to convene at a senior level with both private sector and government
Computer literate with experience using Microsoft Office, internet (familiarity with Salesforce would be an advantage).

The successful applicant will be offered a consultancy contract, with a competitive service fee depending on experience and seniority.
This role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Frequent travel to meetings in the capital as well as to the industrial parks and key infrastructure attributes is to be expected, as well as potential international travel within East-Africa and beyond.
Candidates are based in Ethiopia or should be eligible to obtain permission to work in Ethiopia. IDH will not be in a position to help secure the required work documentation for Ethiopia.
