Overview:The Social and Behavioral Specialist works on the development of research, technical assistance, and evaluation related to gender, sexual and reproductive health, child marriage and/or adolescent health and development. S/he will possess strong analytical skills and demonstrated experience in qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation, particularly related to gender, health and/or adolescent development, domestically and globally. S/he will contribute to developing new ideas for analytic and program work and leading the development of proposals to secure funding for this work. The position is based at Kampala Uganda or Nairobi, Kenya with up to 25-30% travel.
Primary Duties:The Social and Behavioral Specialist’s responsibilities will include managing projects; mentoring junior staff members; identifying and securing resources for team projects; engaging with donors and partners; and producing high quality deliverables in a timely manner. Responsibilities also include representing the team’s research through publishing, presentations, conferences, media briefings, speaking engagements, and professional networks; and, responsibility for financial planning and budgeting for projects.
Research and Evaluation: Designs and supervises, often in partnership with local and/or international teams, research plans and protocols and monitoring and evaluation frameworks, as appropriate. Develops methodologies and analytical tools, analyzes primary and secondary data, supervises research and program evaluations pertaining to issues related to sexual and reproductive health, adolescent health and development and gender equality. Working both independently and in collaboration with others, he/she will: help conceptualize research plans, develop qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments, undertake literature reviews and analyses, supervise data collection, analyze data and communicate findings in written reports for various audiences. Writes high quality reports and other outputs.
Business Development: Develops areas of research and proposals focusing on gender, sexual and reproductive health, child marriage and/or adolescent health and development that complement and build on ongoing research efforts and contribute to achieving
ICRW’s overall strategic objectives. Works closely with colleagues to conceptualize and design proposals, projects and budgets, as well as to disseminate findings. Identifies potential funding sources and partners and actively cultivates potential opportunities. Will actively engage with current partners & donors. He/she will also develop and cultivate relations with new partners and donors.
Project Management and Strategic Support: Provides managerial and technical leadership on projects, oversees and contributes to development and management of program design and implementation, develops and manages project budgets, pulling together appropriate project teams and supervising staff, liaising with ICRW support units and managing partner and donor relationships.
Representation: Maintains professional expertise and recognition outside of ICRW through publishing and speaking in relevant forums. Authors articles and represents ICRW in the media and with colleague organizations; serves on coalitions and builds advocacy efforts in line with current research program.
Technical Advisory Services: Provides technical assistance to a range of clients and partners on issues related to gender integration, monitoring and evaluation, health, adolescent development and more, depending on need.
Education:PhD or Master’s degree in Public Health, Demography, Sociology, International Development or related social science.
Skills and Experience:A competitive candidate will bring many of the following credentials, skills and experience:
Minimum four years of post-Ph.D. experience or six years of post-master experience in evaluation, research, program and/or policy analysis in gender and development as it relates to several of the following thematic issues: sexual and reproductive health, child marriage and/or adolescent health and development.
Demonstrated experience working in low- and middle-income countries.
Previous research experience for projects funded by USAID, DfID and UN donors highly desired.
Proven experience in the design and conduct of formative, operations and/or evaluation research in health and social sciences in coordination with multiple international and in-country partners.
Proven experience in providing training, capacity building and technical assistance for research and programming on gender and development.
Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into policy and/or programming.
Significant experience with project and budget management and donor/partner relations is essential.
Expertise in qualitative and/or mixed methods data collection and analysis, to include proficiency with one or more of the following analytical software packages: SPSS, STATA, SAS, Atlas.ti, NVivo or similar packages.
Strong understanding of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) principles, concepts, and methodologies.
Ability to effectively manage and juggle multiple projects, including staffing, work plans, deliverables, timelines and budgets, along with maturity, diplomacy and independence to work effectively with in-country partners, donors and project staff.
Ability to supervise and mentor other staff and consultants.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into clear, compelling written narrative and public presentations for all variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
Team player with proven ability to work collaboratively with professionals at different levels, including colleagues, partners and donor organizations.
High-level of proficiency in English required and one proficiency in another language highly preferred.
