Overall Purpose of the Job

To support the effective and impactful internal and external communication and engagement with all relevant stakeholders for the project “Scaling regenerative black soldier fly farming innovations with vegetable pushpull cropping systems for One Health in Rural Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.”

Specific Duties

  • Support field staff in training farmers using appropriate methods like farmer field days, farmer field schools, agricultural shows, and on-farm demonstrations. The training should focus on the connections between black solder fly (BSF) farming and vegetable-integrated push-pull farming methods, incorporating the use of black soldier fly frass fertilizer to enhance crop yields.

  • Support the development of training materials for the project.

  • Liaise with the icipe’s Communications Unit, to ensure that the structure adequately responds to icipe’s principles of communication branding (web interface space for social media, communication products, publications).

  • Regularly supply up-to-date content for social media on field and training initiatives to increase project visibility.

  • Compile information for the icipe’s internal weekly and monthly bulletins.

  • Ensure media coverage of project activities and events in Uganda.

  • Prepare monthly reports on project activities carried out directly and by farmer trainers, NGOs,
    community-based organizations (CBOs), and government collaborators in assigned locations.

    Requirements/Qualifications

  • BSc in a relevant field including mass communication, journalism, development studies, international relations, or other related fields.

  • MSc will be an added advantage.

  • At least three years of practical experience in communication.

  • Ability to read, write, and speak in the local languages (Luganda, Lusoga, Lugisu, and Swahili).

  • Familiarity with desktop publishing, HTML, photography, videography, and photo editing.

  • Excellent written and spoken command of English, and the ability to convey complex ideas creatively, clearly, directly, and lively.

  • Excellent skills in content development, and editorial skills.

  • Basic data exploration and analytical skills.

    Other Desirable Attributes

  • Experience in establishing and maintaining media relations.

  • Experience with communications and/or media relations in a research-intensive organisation.

  • Strong understanding and experience with digital content and social media analytics.

  • Make decisions for own job function and require approval from supervisor.

  • May assist in training other employees in their work. Training of farmer groups, NGOs, and
    NARES.

  • Accountability for field imprest.

  • Engagement with NARES, NGOs, farmers.
