Humanitarian Open Street Map Team (HOT) is a US-based NGO that applies the principles of open data sharing for humanitarian response and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
As the world’s preeminent participatory mapping NGO, HOT has fostered a global mapping community composed of more than 32,000 people with ground operations in five countries. Free, up-to-date maps are a critical resource when relief organizations are responding to disasters or political crises. The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) creates and provides those maps.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior HOT representative in Tanzania.
  • Develop project strategy and approach in coordination with HOT senior management and local stakeholders.
  • Ensure timely implementation of all program activities.
  • Manage a team of local staff and oversee work of interns and community volunteers.
  • Assist with writing and delivering project reports according to donor schedule.

    Requirements
    Essential:


  • University or college degree in international development, GIS, Disaster Risk Management, urban planning or other related field.
  • A least 5 years experience working in development cooperation and donor funded projects involving community/participatory mapping, of which 2 years are in management positions.
  • Experience managing project budgets of $100,000 USD and greater.
  • Excellent analytical skills, and able to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent team management skills in managing and coordinating groups of people, including speaking and training sessions.
  • Experience designing and carrying out community mapping exercises, including: collecting data, using OSM, teaching quality assurance, collaborating with various stakeholders, and building capacity in mapping.
  • Experience in participatory data collection, preferably using mobile, digital data collection tools such as Kobo and Open MapKit.
  • Experience developing self-sufficient and sustainable community groups, including developing technical skill sets.
  • Fluency in English and ability to work in an environment of diverse languages and cultures.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency including experience working in informal settlements in a developing country context.

    Desirable:

  • Experience in disaster risk reduction/disaster risk management with a focus on flood hazards.
  • Demonstrable experience with deploying the InaSAFE tool for disaster contingency planning, consequently sharing experiences and knowledge from its deployment.
  • Strong ICT and information management skills and eagerness/ability to learn new technologies.
  • Proficiency in Swahili.
