Job Summary:

HJFMRI-KE seeks to hire a Clinical Microbiologist for an upcoming contract.

The applicant will be expected to evaluate and provide technical input into all technical procedures at reference and sentinel sites hospital laboratories to improve quality and consistency of data generating in the
network.

The Clinical microbiologist will provide technical expertise in data interpretation and
reporting and translation of AMR data into improved practices, guidelines and policies in human health.

The clinical microbiologist will coordinate engagement with healthcare teams and public
health professionals and facilitate communication among stakeholders in the surveillance system
in support the objectives of the Kenya national action plan and surveillance strategy.

Responsibility Summary

Review and improve all SOPs for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes for AMR surveillance and reference laboratories.

Review, analyze and interpret data from the sentinel sites diagnosis

Generate reports together with data managers, epidemiologists and communicate results
to different stakeholders including the TWGs and advice coordinating secretariat on
interpretation of reports.

Review all reports being internally and externally disseminated from the Surveillance
network.

Train and advise data M&E managers, epidemiologists on basic parameters to ensure
quality data and to develop alerts for reporting

Provide consultation on specimen collection and transport, test interpretation and
development of antiprograms at local, national and international levels

Provide mentorship to the Reference laboratory Microbiology team on how to effectively
manage the surveillance network of laboratories in the surveillance network to
demonstrate leadership.

Evaluate the NPHL clinical microbiology lab and improve its ability to function as a reference laboratory (e.g. the personnel and training capacity, eQA function).

Provide training and guidance on necessary improvements.

Provide advice for unusual results/outcomes.

Provide site support and training to surveillance

sites laboratories on lab practices,
procedures that can reduce contamination rates, challenging procedures, diagnostic and
interpreting issues,

Provide mentorship together with Microbiology reference lab team via frequent
videoconferencing with all surveillance site labs and research fellows

Participate in translating AMR surveillance data into policy recommendations on
therapeutic guidelines

Provide guidance and train on appropriate antimicrobial stewardship interventions,
practices and guidelines for participating hospitals

Experience and Education levels:

Ideal qualifications are a clinician or medical doctor with postdoctoral training in clinical and medical microbiology with appropriate certifications from programs accredited by the
Committee on Postdoctoral Educational Programs (CPEP) (within the American Academy of
Microbiology and the American Society for Microbiology) or by the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent bodies.

Doctoral-level scientists or
individuals with an M.D. with experience in directing high-complexity large public health
microbiology laboratories may also qualify to apply.
