Mission Context
Uganda currently faces the fastest-growing refugee crisis in the world. From July 2016 through January 2017, more than 512,000 South Sudanese refugees arrived in the country – an average of roughly 2,400 per day – flying from conflict, insecurity and famine in their country.
Handicap International conducted a first rapid assessment mission in November 2016 following the increase in the influx of refugees from South Sudan. On the base of the results of this first mission, an emergency response team deployed to Uganda in May 2017 with the objective of updating and deepening on the findings of the first assessment, defining an operational strategy and preparing the set-up of Handicap International response in Uganda.
Following the results of the assessment, HI has developed an integrated strategy aiming at providing inclusive protection and life-saving integrated humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable population (refugees and host population) affected by the refugee crisis. Main areas of intervention are Protection, Inclusion, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, and Food Security and Livelihoods. -strengthening of inclusion approaches among humanitarian actors in place
