Background]
Since its foundation in 1968, GRT (Group for Transcultural Relations) has been working with socially marginalized groups and individuals by setting up protection mechanisms in order to promote social inclusion.
GRT is active in Kenya and Somalia since 1996, where the main fields of intervention are: Community Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Protection (GBV and Street Children) and (forced) Migrations, being expression of GRT’s core areas of expertise.
Within the framework of GRT Protection component, the organization seeks to fill the position of Counsellor/Social worker (PSS).
PreambleThe double title “counsellor/Social worker (PSS)” (hereinafter referred to as “Counsellor”) is explained by the fact that, in addition to certified counsellor, we will also consider for this position candidates with background as social workers with strong experience in providing psychosocial and emotional support (better if sustained by certificates).
Both counsellors and social workers are encouraged to apply.
We will privilege dynamic professionals ready to work in informal settings whenever necessary, thus the candidate should not expect a desk/office based position.
Purpose of the PositionThe Counsellor will be responsible for the design of psychosocial rehabilitation plan for vulnerable street children and to provide psychosocial and emotional support to street children and their families.
The counsellor is required to be actively involved in the outreach activities in the street, particularly establishing positive relationship of trust and confidence with the street children and families. Moreover, the Counsellor will be involved in peer to peer counselling and individual follow up of the beneficiaries, as well as organize and participate in workshops and trainings according to project’s workplan.
With technical and managerial support from GRT Project Manager and Psychosocial officer, the Counsellor will ensure that programme’s goals and objectives are met in a timely and effective manner.
The Counsellor’s general responsibilities are the following:Responding promptly to any protection risk or violation of the rights of vulnerable individuals in Kenya.
Respecting GRT’s Field Operational Procedures and Code of Conduct at all times.
Ensuring proper care of GRT’s properties.
Undertaking any other task as indicated by GRT Management.
Compliance
to the principle of confidentiality at all times.
Key Responsibilities
To design of psychosocial rehabilitation plans for targeted beneficiaries
To ensure proper case placement and management, including regular follow up
To provide emotional and psychosocial support
Person-centred approach and BID is ensured
Outreach activities in the streets with the children
Family tracing, visits and follow up
Organisation and implementation (together with other relevant GRT staff) of workshops and trainings with the local community
Coordinate with other staff/stakeholders to timely and comprehensively respond to individual’ needs (i.e. case referral, specialised counselling, etc.)
Filling a database to keep track of the counselling provided to the beneficiaries of the project;
Timely provision of reports to GRT supervisors as directed during implementation
Essential Requirements
Bachelor/Master’s Degree in Social Sciences, Counselling or Social Work
Professional trainings in psychosocial support and/or counselling
Minimum 3-year experience in working in protection programmes
Experience in street outreach programmes and work with the local communities
Fluent spoken and written English
Able to write accurate reports and minutes
Good understanding of humanitarian practices and emergency activities
Honesty and truthfulness
Capable of working pro-actively and independently, while being an excellent team worker
Demonstrated experience in capacity building and training
Excellent computer literacy
Experience in working with local stakeholders such as health clinics and NGOs
