Job DescriptionSummaryGreenPath Food is currently seeking a Packhouse Officer.
This individual will have the unique opportunity to help shape the future of a young, environmentally and socially-conscious agribusiness in Ethiopia, one of Africa’s most promising economies.
Ideal candidates have experience working in Ethiopia and the ability to successfully lead the company’s expansion to a new part of the country as the company scales over the next 5 years, selling more than 500 tons of horticulture products annually produced by several hundred Partner Farmers.
BackgroundGreenPath Food is a specialty food company that produces and sources premium food products through a large network of smallholder Partner Farms.
The company exports its premium, organic products to specialty retailers and wholesalers in the Europe and the Middle East.
GreenPath currently operates one flagship Production Site with a team of nearly 100 staff and 150 Partner Farms three hours southwest of Addis Ababa in the Southern Ethiopian Highlands.
As a young, growing company, GreenPath is currently planning expansion to multiple new Production Areas, with an ultimate vision of becoming East Africa’s largest smallholder-grown food company.
The senior staff at the organization are a group of highly talented professionals with experience in Ethiopian export, horticulture, and agricultural development sectors, as well as direct experience in the Ethiopian startup context.

The company has raised a significant round of investment which will provide the Senior Site Manager with the resources that she/he will need to grow operations in Ethiopia four-fold in the next two years.
Mission of RoleTo operate infrastructure and activities related to packhouse activities; and to lead a team that aggregates, sorts, cleans, stores and packs the highest quality outputs
Job RequirementsResponsibilities & Outcomes Input Procurement, Production & Sales
Harvest documentation is processed and ready for the finance team within two business days of the end of the harvest so that farmers can be paid on schedule
Ensure product delivery order prepared and issued during shipment
Post-Harvest Management, Storage & Packing
Packhouse operations meets and maintains all EU Organic and GLOBAL G.A.P. standards as well as any other standards adopted by the company
All produce delivered to the packhouse is cleaned, crated, and placed in the cold store within 2
hours of it arriving at the packhouse
Lead the pack house operations during one shift per day--washing, grading, measuring, packing, loading and offloading
Ensure quality of products before shipment by doing quality inspection
Prepare weekly reports for received products to overview the accepted and rejected products and be sure to disseminate the report for all Production Team members
All products are loaded onto the cold truck within one hour of the vehicle’s arrival at the FSC
Prepare training manuals and delivered to workers on relevant topics related to pack house operations, food safety, product quality, etc.
Fully manage pack house workers’ daily activities while the Packhouse Deputy Manager is on leave.
Support the management of the pack house workers’ daily activities during the daily shift when the Packhouse Deputy Manager is not working
Support recruitment of additional workers when needed
Ensure laborer efficiency is measured and that staff are effectively motivated
Coach laborers to ensure they grow professionally and remain focused on minimizing risks
Required Competencies
Experienced and comfortable living in a small Ethiopian city like Butajira
Knowledge of Ethiopian fruit and vegetable industry
Bachelor's degree in Horticulture Business or related degree
Able to read, write, and speak in English and Amharic (Afan Oromo and/or Guragigna preferred, but not required)
Required Experience
Experience working in a horticulture packhouse operation for at least 2 years, ideally with time as both a packer and supervisor. Of these, at least 6 months should be with a vegetable and/or herb company
Experience working with computers
Preferred Experience
Experience working at an early-stage organization that is still developing its procedure and protocols
Experience with the following specific crops: green beans, sugar snap peas, snow peas, lemongrass, besso billa, mint, and/or hot peppers
Experience with financial management systems
Reporting
The Packhouse Officer reports to the Packhouse Deputy Manager. She/he will manage the overall Packhouse Operations, but the Packhouse Office will be responsible to manage the packhouse during one shift per day.
Location
This position is based full time at GreenPath’s Butajira Farmer Service Center. Only candidates seriously committed to living full time in Butajira for at least 30 months should apply.
Working Hours
Given the nature of this position, the working hours may begin as early as 5:30 am or end as late as 9:30pm.
