Job Description

Position Summary:

Under overall supervision of Laboratory Manager and direct supervision of Laboratory Supervisor, employee performs phlebotomy and routine laboratory tests and maintains records. Work is performed under general supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities:

I. Specimen Collection, Handling, and Processing:

Performs phlebotomy and processing of specimens for in house test and to be sent to outside labs.

Receives specimens from wards and/or phlebotomy.

Process specimens including receiving, sorting, accessioning and storing.

Follows established procedures when processing specimens for analysis.

Ensure that specimen are received, accessioned, and delivered to the laboratory in a timely manner.

Aliquot specimens properly as needed.

Store specimens in proper place and temperature; discard specimens that exceed retention time.

Ensure all specimens meet the referral test requirements.

II. Test Performance:

Notifies Laboratory supervisor/ Laboratory Manager of problems occurring during the test performance that would affect patient test results.

III. Test Result Reporting:

Ensure all critical results have been called and documented by workstations.

Record results in the log book.

IV. Instrument Related Responsibility:

Ensures proper functioning of instruments before release of patient results.

Perform routine preventative maintenance of equipment as scheduled and documented.

Notifies Laboratory Supervisor of instrument malfunction.

V. Purchasing and Inventory control:

Utilizes all supplies and equipment in an appropriate and cost effective, efficient manner.

VI. Other Job Related Tasks:

Demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care.

Works independently as well as collaboratively.

Demonstrates punctual and reliable attendance.

Actively pursues ways to improve laboratory efficiency.

Participates in maintaining a clean and orderly facility.

Adheres to all laboratory standard procedures.

Protects patient confidentiality by abiding by hospital confidentiality statement.

Rotates through assigned work areas of the department as required.

Rotates through weekend and evening shifts as required.

Assists other laboratory personnel when own work is completed.

Performs other duties as required.

I. Job Related Standards

Exhibit through your day to day actions the hospital slogan “where patient comes first”, understand that the needs of the patient are our first priority;

Practice with Kindness, ethics and Honesty;

Be always on time and physically available during all duty hours;

Under any circumstances never leaves the hospital without physically handing over to another colleague;

Carry out all documentation per laboratory standard without exception this includes:

A. Clearly label all specimen with patient name,

age and time of collection as the sample is collected;

B. Document result in the appropriate book along with time of completion;

C. Filling out appropriate forms;

Confirm appropriate sample is collected for appropriate test;

Sign all result before dispatched and Never sign a totally erroneous result;

Inform any critical values to the physician directly and communicate it;

Communicate clearly with your patients about what you are about to do to them, similarly keep a smooth communication among your colleagues AND inform patient of the expected result time and communicate clearly with pts faced with delays and always provide them with every possible option;

Never criticize one another in front of a patient nor try to pass a blame to another departments or colleagues in any situation as every one of us shares the same obligation to satisfy our patient need;

Give constructive criticism to a colleague or subordinate promptly but off course in a private room…depending on the situation you may also get another colleague involved;

Respect the hospital dress code (uniform), be well groomed and maintain good hygiene;

Maintain patient confidentiality;

Avoid talking on your cell phone for personal matter while with a patient; if work related please excuse yourself and inform patient that the call was work related;

Be willing to assist patients and colleagues promptly when they seek your help;

Take good care of the laboratory equipment and carry out daily maintenance and maintain a clean work bench;

Strive to continuously improve your skills and knowledge and attend all required training;

Avoid chewing gum, eating or drinking while on duty;

Do not go to another department to talk about non-work related things;

Strive to provide a level of service that exceeds patients’ expectations whenever possible;

Have a positive attitude and let’s all avoid being defensive;

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

Diploma or Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology area with professional license as a Junior/ Senior Medical Laboratory Technician approved by Food, Medicine and Health Care Administration and Control Authority of Ethiopia.
