Background: KMET is a local NGO based in Kisumu that has been responding to issues of GBV in Western Kenya.
Due to lack of safe place for survivors of Gender Based Violence (GBV), as last resort, often GBV survivors are forced to accept offered temporary solution by their families or among relatives with in the community.
This arrangement is yet to be safe and functional for both survivors and partners working with GBV Survivors.
Hence, KMET has established a GBV Shelter (KMET Freedom House) that will address safety and security of survivors at the Freedom House, based in Tom Mboya Estate, Kisumu County.
We will offer protection to GBV survivors whose lives are in danger from the perpetrators and a safe home for referrals for GBV services to all the actors along GBV referral pathway in Kisumu and beyond.
The purpose of this position:
Reporting to the Program Manager – Gender Livelihoods. The Social Worker will be based at KMET and incharge of the day to day operations of the Safe house.
S/he will be responsible for provision of case management and psychosocial support to GBV survivors & persons at risk.
Provide a mother figure to the victims at the House while Ensuring complete care and treatment of GBV survivors at the House including referrals to partner agencies for further case management.
Primary Responsibilities
Safe House Management
Provide professional and confidential services to survivors of GBV, grounded in the Freedom House, survivor-centered case management approach.
Document client data accurately in the intake forms and consent forms and ensure they are under lock and key.
Provide assessment and counseling both at individual and group level as the situation demands.
Ensure all work with SGBV survivors is confidential and that ethical practices are observed.
Ensure survivors grounded at the safe house are fed, and the house is clean.
Define the services offered at GBV shelter including referrals
Manage, monitor and supervise the shelter including the safety and security of survivors
Define survivor/victim eligibility criteria
Define minimum services to be offered at the shelter and related referral services available in the county
Coordination and Networking
Strengthen and maintain networks with community leaders, women leaders, and service providers to ensure
that survivors receive compassionate support from the community and to encourage greater communication, collaboration, and coordination among partners (protection, health, legal, and psychosocial sectors)
Work in collaboration with community volunteers to ensure ongoing needs of women and girls are being met through prevention-related activities.
Community engagement and outreach
Conduct sensitization, dialogue and mediation sessions with the wider population about GBV related issues.
Facilitate formation of groups for survivors of SGBV and other vulnerable groups at the women & girls’ safe space.
Monitoring and evaluation
Draft and share quality weekly, monthly, quarterly Situational Reports and annual reports backed with photos while maintaining beneficiary protection principles.
Document human interest story/best practice per quarter as part of the report
Conduct any other related activities as deemed necessary
Desired Experience and technical competencies:
Diploma Qualification in relevant field (Social Science, Social Work, Psychology, Gender and Development) with Certification in Counselling.
Minimum 2 years of direct psychosocial/ counseling experience; experience working with survivors of violence preferred.
Clear understanding of gender, abuse of power, and issues surrounding violence against women
Preferably 35 years and above – Highly motivated, compassionate person who can respond to emergencies at any time and able to work for long hours.
Fluency in written and spoken English essential
Must be able to use computer and able to write Excellent reports within time.
