The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a Head of Policy and Advocacy to support the development of national policies and plans on nutrition and healthy diets in Ethiopia. This role will be offered on a 4 years’ fixed-term contract, subject to availability of funding. You will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

About GAIN

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people.

In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially the most vulnerable to malnutrition.

About the Role

Reporting to the Country Director, the Head of Policy and Advocacy will be responsible for leading relevant interventions by GAIN in Ethiopia, in collaboration with the different partners.

In order to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, GAIN aims to make knowledge and evidence easily accessible. Working with partners and governments, we assess critical factors enabling or impeding transformation using available and newly developed tools, methods and metrics.

This is a critical aspect of the role, with the use of tools and metrics for measuring progress being both quantitative and qualitative.

The postholder will lead and shape GAIN Ethiopia’s wider influencing agenda and will support the country office leadership as part of the Country Management Team. You will provide technical support to project staff as required, which will entail a special effort to link and align many aspects of our programmes, learning, and influencing.

Key Responsibilities include;

  • Leading on external engagement with key stakeholders in government, private sector, UN, donors and civil society including academia, media, and other development practitioners and to improve support for GAIN’s mission and increase resources allocated to nutrition in Ethiopia

  • Acting as a technical and organisational resource to facilitate and support national food systems dialogues and other planning mechanisms to develop national food action plans

  • Leading on internal communication to educate and inform fellow GAIN colleagues on the objectives of the FST agenda ensuring each GAIN staff member can contribute

  • Integrating and aligning the Food Systems Summit policy and advocacy work into GAIN’s national business plan

  • Leading on external engagement with key stakeholders in government, private sector, UN, donors and civil society including academia, media, and other development practitioners; to improve support for GAIN’s mission and increase resources allocated to nutrition in Ethiopia

  • Creating opportunities to spread key messages arising from GAIN Ethiopia programming through e.g., media, social media, and positioning events
    Synthesizing and disseminating knowledge and evidence from GAIN Ethiopia programmes that can help drive the agenda
    for nutritious and safe food in Ethiopia

  • Contributing in proposal development and resource mobilization efforts to build the country office project portfolio and expand the scope of work in Ethiopia

  • Contributing to overall country team management to support the delivery of the country office business plan

    About You

    The ideal candidate will have substantial professional experience of policy development, planning and monitoring work within government, INGO or private sector setting that involves public private engagement.

    You should have exceptional stakeholder management and project management skills with the ability to operate comfortably at senior levels with government, business, civil society and donors and work collaboratively with a range of different stakeholders from business, farmers, civil society, academia, consumers, etc.

    In addition to this, you will be expected to posess an excellent command of written and spoken English with strong research and presentation skills. Candidates should have ability to analyse complex policy challenges and chart practical ways forward. You should be highly flexible and willing to travel within and outside of Ethiopia.

    You will have a key understanding of food systems transformation approaches. A Master’s qualification in Public Health or Nutrition, Business or Public Administration, Public Policy or related fields is an added advantage. Candidates with current experience engaging in food policy dialogue at high levels in local context is desirable.

    About our Offer

    The starting salary on offer for this role is from ETB 1,222,716 – ETB 1,397,916 per annum, depending on experience.
