Job Description

  • The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is an international conservation organization based in Germany.

  • In Ethiopia, FZS focusses on the Bale Mountains, supporting the Ethiopian Government and local communities in conserving Africa’s largest tract of Afroalpine habitat on the continent and development of conservation-compatible livelihoods.

  • FZS is the implementing agency for a project entitled Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Ethiopia implemented in Bale Mountain National Park.

  • The Socio-economic monitoring expert will a) reinvigorate the community benefits database to capture the impact of the park on the local economy through casual labor, tourism income, and other activities and b) work with the Social Process Framework consultant and the outreach team to support the collection of socio-economic and asset registration of the permanent settlers in the park as part of the process to develop alternative livelihood strategies for these people.

    Key Job Requirements

  • Degree qualifications in natural resource management, social sciences or other relevant field.

  • Experience in implementing conservation and development programmes in Ethiopia

  • Knowledge of human
    issues relevant to conservation and understanding of the issues around land-use and conservation

  • At least 5 years of experience in “on the ground” work in protected area management or development projects:

  • In situ training of park staff and personnel

  • Experience of collaborating with governmental institutions and with private sector or NGOs involved in integrated conservation and development

  • Familiarity with project management and developing programmes that provide data for use in understanding threats to protected areas

  • Experience of M&E

  • Experience of designing and conducting surveys and socio-economic methodologies

  • Experience of data handling and analysing for management reports

  • English and Afan Oromo speaking

  • Experience in working with local communities

  • Team player

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
