About Fairtrade Africa

Fairtrade Africa (FTA), a wider Fairtrade International movement member, represents Fairtrade certified producers in Africa and the Middle East.

We operate four regional networks: Eastern and Central Africa Network (ECAN) based in Nairobi, Kenya; West Africa Network (WAN) based in Accra, Ghana, Southern Africa Network (SAN) based in Blantyre, Malawi, and the Middle East and North Africa Network (MENA).

Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organizations certified against Fairtrade International Standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, flowers, cotton, bananas, cane sugar, wine, fresh fruits, herbs and spices, and non-traditional commodities including shea butter and rooibos tea. Currently, the organization represents over 1, million producers across 28 countries in Africa. Fairtrade Africa secretariat is located in Nairobi, Kenya, and has 50% ownership of the Fairtrade system.


Assignment Context and Background

  • Capacity building is an ongoing process, which encompasses intellectual capital, social capital,
  • and organizational capital for value addition in obtaining maximum output from factors of
    production (Hargreaves, 2011).
  • Multinationals are involved in the capacity development of their
  • employees for enhancing employee performance. Most organizations have their separate
  • human resource department; however, capacity-building programs and other training
  • programs are less practiced among the public and private banks. Hussain et al. (2012) studied
  • employee performance in the banking sector of Pakistan with respect to gender and job
  • involvement

    The planned training is expected to result in the adoption of new skills and knowledge to stimulate product innovation at the Producer Organization level as well as effective management of the established small business income-generating projects. This training has been necessitated by the need to innovate around market-related initiatives at the Producer Organization level to increase the Producer Organization’s resilience to market challenges and to effectively manage established enterprises.

    Overall, the training is intended to contribute to the producer organization’s market innovativeness and capacity to establish and manage small-scale enterprises.



    Objective and Purpose

    The overall objective of this training is to equip Zawadi Coffee Roasters LTD, a new coffee roaster affiliated to two of our producers located at Fort Tenan, within Rift Valley (Kenya), 50 Kms from Kisumu with entrepreneurial skills and knowledge to increase business innovation, growth and, effective management based on the findings of the Training Needs Assessment (TNA). The key objectives include:

  • Equip the management with relevant knowledge and skills of entrepreneurship which includes coordination and control of the business, resource control, communication skills, cost control, employee management, sales forecasting, and sales skills.
  • Help the participants to set business processes and policies and consequence management for non-conformity.
  • Ensure the management acquires relevant operational skills.
  • Impart basic finance skills.
  • Improve general managerial potential
    and performance culture



    Scope of Work and Methodology

    The above objectives will be achieved within three months (from the date of appointment) through:


  • Conducting a rapid training needs assessment within the targeted Organization.
  • Developing an appropriate training package in consultation with the FTA-ECAN Commercial Manager. This includes the training program.
  • Facilitating training on Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management training topics based on the assignment of objectives and the Training Needs Assessment (TNA) report.
  • Delivering the training sessions using mixed methods (lecture, on-the-job participatory approach, etc.) to achieve the expected results.



    Outputs/deliverables

    The following deliverables are expected from the consultant in due process of the assignment:


  • Training Content and Materials: Design PowerPoint presentations and other participatory training tools that shall be applicable during the training sessions.
  • Delivery of the Training: Provide training to the management participants in line with the identified needs and set objectives with the stipulated timelines of the assignment.
  • Training Report: Prepare a detailed assignment report with an attachment of all the training materials and any resources that shall be generated during the training sessions and on-the-job training. The report should contain recommendations.

    Consultants Expertise
    The consultant(s) should have the following academic qualifications expertise and experiences:

  • Advanced Degree in any of the following or related disciplines: Entrepreneurship, Business Management, or Commerce.
  • Experience in undertaking varied training and capacity-building assignments related to entrepreneurship, operations, and small business management.
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and presentation skills;
  • Disclosure of conflict of interest.


    Cost and Payment

    The consultant(s) should provide a quote for services with a detailed breakdown including applicable government taxes. A Local Purchase Order will be provided before the commencement of the training and the total amount for the training services will be paid after the delivery of the training and submission of the training report.
