Job DescriptionThe Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) wants to recruit employees in the following vacant positions the details of which are mentioned bellow.
About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia.
ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services.
ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities.
Key performance area
Under the general direction and guidance of the Deputy Secretary General of Program sector, the Humanitarian and Development Communication and Promotion of Culture of Non Violence and Peace Director responsible for the following major functional duties.
Plan, organizes, directs, coordinates and controls the humanitarian and development, communication and promotion of cultures of nonviolence and peace activities of the Society;
In collaboration with the capacity building work unit, initiate and develop/review policies, strategy, procedures and guidelines for communication and promotion of cultures of nonviolence and peace and ensure their proper implementation;
Develop/conduct the National Societies activities in all matters related to the dissemination, promotion and implementation of International Humanitarian Law(IHL) and Support the National Society’s informed participation in National and international fora relevant to IHL, its development and application;
Conduct (or contribute to) the dissemination activities of the National Society in the fields of IHL and the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent;
Establishes and maintains a working relationship with the ICRC in promoting and advocating the International Humanitarian Law;
Provides technical support to branches on humanitarian and development communication, promotion of culture of nonviolence and peace, the dissemination of Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and International Humanitarian law;
Ensure cooperation with concerned government authorities for the promotion and implementation of IHL; In collaboration with legal service, works for the protection and regulation of the emblem;
Develops and strengthens the relationship of the Society with stakeholders within and outside the Movement and makes synergized endeavors to promote mutual understanding and peace;
Works on proper usage of Red Cross Emblem within the NS and third parties; Engages with the relevant Federal authorities in the promotion and inclusion of the Red Cross Principles and Values in the education and social system of the country;
In collaboration with capacity building work unit, strengthen the capacity of branches’ staffs, volunteers and governance on the promotion and dissemination activities;
Develop guidelines and training materials to disseminate the fundamental principles and values of Red Cross; Develop guidelines for the National youth training Program on culture of non-violence and promotion of peace; Facilitate and
coordinates press release on media at National levels;
Conduct periodical monitoring and provide technical assistance on branches media utilization and take corrective action of any news and information about the NS on media including social media;
Promotes and disseminates of culture of nonviolence and peace to the public and particularly to the youth; Design National ERCS’s Youth Peace Corps Program, Clubs Social Service Program & Children Peace Program.
Facilitate Communication and cooperation with concerned government and non-government organizations on awareness creation of promotion of culture of nonviolence and peace within the framework of the Society’s mandate;
Promote Red Cross activities for the general public through regular information release to various media, press conference, press release, disaster event communication etc;
Identify, document and promote indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms;
Ensure the qualities and standards of core publication materials; Organize media days to inform about the works and achievements of the NS;
In collaboration with capacity building work unit strengthen the public relations team of the Society, with the required equipment and skills; Organize signature events (prize competition events) and RC campaigns, RC Day, etc.;
Disseminate ERCS policies, strategies, plans, and so forth, to internal and external stakeholders;
Establish/strengthen public feedback mechanisms; Ensure promotion of culture of nonviolence and peace is mainstreamed in all programs/projects:
Ensure the establishment of ERCS resource center that accommodate library, pictures gallery & various publication to enhance humanitarian and development research of national society;
Promote the NS’s Image and activities through mainstream and social media and analyze social media and respond to complaints and feedbacks;
Lead in designing and implementation of promotion of culture of non-violence and peace activities for ERCS in vulnerable and conflict-impacted areas;
Liaise with local authorities, NGOs, CBOs, Government agencies to improve understanding of conflict resolution mechanisms and promotion of culture of non-violence and peace;
Liaise with a diverse range of organizations including bilateral and multi-lateral agencies, on promotion of culture of non-violence and peace;
Identify new promotion of culture of non-violence and peace program opportunities for vulnerable communities through effective partnership with NGO’s, CBOs and other partners.
Monitor the implementation of promotion of culture of non-violence and peace program;
Periodically reports the performance of the work unit to Deputy Secretary General for program management
Job Requirements
Qualification and Professional Experience
Second/First degree in Peace and Security, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, International Law, Journalism and communication, Foreign language, literature, Social Work/ Sociology/ Social Psychology/ Social Anthropology.
10 /12 year work out of which 5/7 years on managerial position
Other skills & Competencies
Short term trainings in communication, partnership & humanitarian diplomacy
High communication & advocacy skill; practical skill in fostering partnership & social mobilization.
Ability to work with multi-cultural/lingual & disciplinary environment
