BackgroundThe National Data Management Center for health (NDMC) at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is a responsible center to centrally archive health and health related data, process and manage health research, apply robust data analytic technics, synthesis evidence and to ensure evidence utilization for decision making by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and other relevant stakeholders at local, sub-national and national and international levels.
NDMC has collaborative partnership with Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington and has established a Burden of Disease (BoD) Unit.
The BoD Unit is responsible for data mapping, collecting, reviewing and archiving available health and health related data in the country and for producing national and subnational burden of disease estimates collaboratively with Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study centered at IHME for population and demography, mortality and risk factors for a range of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, maternal newborn and child health, nutrition and for injuries.
The BoD unit is building a Geospatial Analysis/research team in collaboration with IHME. The unit creates platforms for translating BoD evidence for decision and policy at national and subnational levels. The NDMC is looking for high caliber staff for this collaborative project.
Roles and responsibilities Lead the geospatial analysis for the national and subnational burden of disease study
Lead geospatial data mapping, collecting, review and extraction, data standardization for burden of disease geospatial analysis
Collaborate with local institutes and experts collaborating on burden of disease study
Work with IHME geospatial analysis (LBD) team and strengthen the collaboration
Provide geospatial data management and analysis trainings and mentorship on
geospatial burden of disease analysis
Write scientific manuscripts and technical reports using geospatial methods and techniques
Network with ministry of health, regional health bureaus and partners
Facilitate evidence translation to health policy and decisions
Support grant writing initiatives of NDMC
Represent burden of disease unit on geospatial analysis in conferences, meetings, workshops and others
Job Requirements
PhD/MSC in Geospatial Epidemiology with demonstrated research8 years experience related to the field
Experience working in epidemiological studies, burden of disease and other related areas
Desired skills and experiences
Ability in conceptualizing, devising and leading geospatial epidemiological research
Demonstrated experience in designing different types of surveys and research programs, research proposals and protocols,
Demonstrated ability in advanced geospatial epidemiology analysis methods and techniques
Ability to work with multiple geospatial health data/research systems and multiple data sources
Ability to work with research institutes, academia and the health sector, with local and international collaborators
Ability to supervise junior researchers, data managers, data analysts …
Be able to provide substantial contribution in the scientific advisory committee, research technical working groups and others
Be able to use statistical software such as Stata, SPSS or R etc.
Demonstrated research communication and interpersonal communication skills
Experience working with existing Ethiopia health policies, strategies and plans
Able to facilitate and assist in mapping, centralizing, digitizing, manage and analyze existing and new data sources in the country
Demonstrated ability to produce policy relevant findings from rigorous systematic reviews, in-depth analysis of studies and facilitate translation.
Ability to develop evidence use tracking mechanisms at national and regional levels
