Job DescriptionEthiopian Academy of Sciences is posting this EOI to deploy a firm or individual consultant who can deliver professional service of a production of gender focused report on the contribution of women in the fight against COVID-19 in Ethiopia.
Qualified consultants will be selected in accordance with the procedures set out in the Academy’s Guidelines.
Organizational Profile
The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) was first founded on March 27, 2010 by a group of prominent scholars drawn from a variety of disciples and professions and launched on April 10, 2010. The mandate of EAS is to provide evidence-based advice to the Government, to promote culture of science among the public and to promote the development of the sciences and their applications.
EAS carries out its mandate by undertaking consensus studies, publishing reports, organizing conferences, public lectures and workshops on issues deemed to be nationally important.
Time Frame
The assignment is expected to be completed within 2 months of time as of the date of the signing of agreement.
Background of the Assignment
Following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in Ethiopia, the government has been taking significant measures to mitigate and contain the spread of the virus in the country including the declaration of the State of Emergency.
Dealing with crisis requires collaborative efforts of all sectors and equal representation of women and men in making decisions.
The Government has also taken a significant step to bring women into leadership positions, where women are placed in 50% of the ministerial positions, on par with their counterpart of men as part of the reform.
Despite this, in Ethiopia the role and achievements of women have not received as much attention as it should.
In relation to the pandemic, so much has been said about women’s vulnerability and the need to acknowledge the differential impact of the pandemic on women; however, the role of women and their impact in the fight against the pandemic has not received the limelight.
EAS as part of its project-Bridge, funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation is planning to produce a gender focused report on responses to COVID-19. EAS would like to produce the report to highlight, document and communicate outstanding success stories of women in their effort to respond to COVID-19 and its subsequent impacts.
I t will also aims at popularizing the role of women in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic at all level and in all aspects of life.
The Academy is therefore pleased to invite qualified and interested consultants from Gender and Communication sectors to send their expression of interest to participate in the production of the report.
Expected Deliverables
Inception report articulating methodology, content description and schedule
Draft of the report for review
Presentation and participation in a discussion platform that EAS shall organize

Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare a detailed inception report on
how to undertake the assessment
Undertake desk review of relevant documents
Structure the report based on the methodology in place
Work closely with the Communication Consultant in the identification of women with stories worth capturing
Work closely with the Communication Consultant to contact with the relevant institutions and people to identify potential women candidates who are believed to have contributed in the fight against COVID 19
Work with the Communication Consultant to collect and document stories.
Ensure credibility of the gathered information
Ensure Sectoral representation
Review the gender implication of the pandemic

Duties and Responsibilities
Articulate the content and format of the report and present this in the inception report
Gather information on the accomplishments and success stories of the identified women from various stakeholder institutions and the identified women themselves using Key Informant Interview (KII) and case study methods
Connect with the potential women, organize and conduct interviews,
Work closely with the gender consultant gender contextualize the stories captured
Collect documents on the stories to be documented
Write the story narrative in a creative way
Capture and/or buy photos of a good quality to support stories
Work the layout and design of the report
Incorporate comments that will be provided from the Academy and other key stakeholders
Submit a ready to print bilingual document (English and Amharic)
Job Requirements
Gender Consultant
Qualifications
A minimum of Master’s Degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, Social Work, or other related fields
A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in doing research, producing articles (newspaper, magazine, journal) and communication materials, etc.
A very good understanding of Ethiopia’s gender dynamics
Knowledge of the status of the pandemic and Ethiopia’s commitment and work in the fight against.
Experience in content reviewing
Strong interpersonal skills – ability to connect, collaborate and work in team
Communication Consultant
Qualifications
A minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Journalism, or other related fields.
Experience in photography, content writing, graphics design and layout
Ability to conduct a research on related topics in order to develop original content.
Proficient in content management systems, and social media platforms. Microsoft Office,
Excellent skill to create composition and attractive visuals for a range of audiences
Ability to self-provide all the necessary equipment and utilities associated with the task
Proficiency with industry desktop publishing tools including Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Quark, and Illustrator and other relevant.
Strong understanding of typography principles.
Strong interpersonal skills – ability to connect, collaborate and work in team
