Background:

Summary:

EAI is in the process of launching Somali Voices: Next Generation project, which includes a new Somali language children’s radio program in collaboration with Sesame Workshop.

The target audience for the radio program is young children (aged 3-8) and their caregivers and it will air weekly, for 6 months, across Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia.

The purpose of the radio series is to provide children with high quality, entertaining radio programming that will build their resilience, promote respect and understanding, provide parenting tips for adults and encourage learning through play. Accompanying the radio programming is an outreach component aimed at school teachers.

Position:

The Sound Producer will be responsible for editing and packaging radio content recorded at Kana TV studios, for dissemination to Somali audiences across the East Africa region.

Reporting & Supervision:

The Sound Producer will report technically to the Media Content Advisor and administratively to the Ethiopia Country Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the recording and lead the post production and editing of child focused, lively radio programming aimed at children (aged 3-8), and caregivers
  • Collect vox pops with children, following required consent and child protection best practice policies
  • Support the creative process (as required) to contribute to the development of story lines and scripts, ensuring that content is both engaging and
    in line with project objectives.
  • Edit songs, voices, vox pops and music to create a lively sound to the radio programming that is appealing to young children.
  • Support other activities required to produce and distribute radio outputs on time
  • Ensure program are culturally sensitive and comply with the objectives of the project
  • Make changes and revisions to final products as required by Sesame Workshop and the Media Content Advisor.
  • Maintain editorial quality control of the outputs with due regard to the aims of the program
  • Ensure production and transmission deadlines are met

    Contract Duration: 3 Months

    Job Requirements

    Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of work experience in radio production
  • Ability to use a range of audio and digital equipment, recording and editing in single track and multi-track
  • Fluency in English and Somali both written and spoken
  • Extensive experience in using audio editing software (video experience is a benefit)
  • Creative ability to use computer programs or musical instruments to make original sounds or music
  • Ability to properly communicate with performers, recording assistants and others within the studio to obtain quality audio tracks
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • Previous experience creating children’s programming an advantage
  • Substantial experience delivering work on schedule, on budget, and for purpose
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite of applications
  • Knowledge and ability to implement principles of management, leadership, peace building, conflict resolution, negotiation, and motivation
  • Demonstrated record of initiative, problem solving, and adaptability
  • Strong listening, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required (media, production, sound engineering); advanced degree(s) preferred
