Job Description: The Country Coordinator oversees and facilitates the YAGM program and has overall responsibility for the YAGM volunteers’ well-being, support, and guidance during their term of service, and thus plays both a pastoral and administrative role.
The Country Coordinator, in consultation with staff of the ELCA Service and Justice Home Area (ELCA/SJ) and the Christian Community and Leadership Home Area (ELCA/CCL) , has the primary role in making decisions about a volunteer’s placement, term of service, planning and implementing in-country orientation and retreats, facilitating conflict resolution and responding to crisis and emergency situations.
The Country Coordinator also facilitates in-country logistics for YAGM volunteers such as visa procedures, finances and stipends, housing, working out individual placements, arrivals and departures, and evaluations of YAGM volunteers.
Specific assignments may include the following:
Work closely with companion church and organization leaders in determining site placement (work sites) and housing arrangements appropriate for each volunteer
Build relationships with new and existing partners in the region to explore possibilities for program expansion
Participate in the annual discernment & interview process for young adult applicants and assign candidates to specific placements
Train and build the capacity of local supervisors in the site placements
Provide comprehensive orientation for the young adults upon their arrival
Support young adults in their spiritual development through worship, Bible study, vocational discernment, and spiritual growth opportunities
Prepare and direct retreats for volunteers throughout the year
Engage in thorough study of the history and current events pertinent to the region; prepare and facilitate continuing education opportunities which allow for YAGM volunteers to develop a holistic understanding of salient issues impacting the region & its people
Make a minimum of two annual site visits to the volunteers’ placements for evaluation, support, and conversation with the volunteers and their supervisors
Administer the finances of the YAGM program; prepare annual budgets
Attend to issues as they arise related to the program; work with Service and Justice staff and local partners to seek resolution
Support the goals of the YAGM program through the implementation of its program components)
All ELCA Global Personnel participate in mission interpretation
Experience and Skills:
Minimum B.A. plus 5 years of experience, required.
Theological training at the Masters level (M.Div, M.A.) or above, strongly preferred.
Open to clergy or lay; first call candidates are eligible to apply.
Minimum 1 year experience living/working internationally, preferred.
Experience working with young adults in vocational and/or faith-based settings, preferred.
An understanding of the culture of US young adults and a passion for accompanying them in questions of life, faith, and vocation.
Capacity to reflect theologically - and to help young adults do the same - on relevant social, political, economic, & ecclesiastical issues.
Group leadership skills, including guiding young adults in spiritual life.
Cross-cultural sensitivity and personal resiliency.
Strong organizational and personnel management skills; experience with budget management and project planning.
Strong writing and communication skills.
Capacity to engage and understand complex issues from a variety of potentially conflicting viewpoints.
li> Ability to work collaboratively with ELCA/SJ and ELCA/CCL staff, international religious & ecumenical organizations, vendors, NGOs and officials.
Computer skills, including MS Word, PowerPoint and e-mail.
Previous experience with the YAGM program, helpful.
Terms and Conditions
This position is supported under the terms of ELCA Service and Justice Expectations and Support for Long Term Global Personnel.
Those provisions include: international transportation, transportation related to work assignment, pensions and major medical coverage, assistance with schooling for children from kindergarten through high school, housing and cash salary which is adjusted according to the goods and services differential for Cambodia.
