About Education Development Center (EDC)

EDC is a global nonprofit organization that designs, delivers and evaluates innovative programs to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges in education, health, and economic opportunity.

Working with public sector and private partners, we harness the power of people and systems to improve education, health promotion and care, workforce preparation, communications technologies, and civic engagement.

Founded in 1958, EDC’s headquarters are located in Waltham MA, USA. We also have offices in New York City and Washington, DC, USA. EDC implements projects in over 35 countries.

About USAID/READ II Project

READ II's overall objective is to contribute to USAID/Ethiopia's goal of improving the reading proficiency of 15 million children by 2023.

While most of READ II's interventions support reading and writing improvement, USAID/Ethiopia will not neglect working in a responsive and systematic manner to improve services for the millions of students who are chronically or unexpectedly confronted by the effects of dire poverty, conflict, or emergency-related events.

READ II intervenes in 50 woredas in six regions of Ethiopia: Addis Ababa, Amhara, Oromia, SNNPR, Tigray, and Somali. It targets 3,000 schools in an enhanced model of holistic interventions, including community outreach and cross-cutting interventions in gender and at-risk and vulnerable children.

The core of READ II’s gender approach is to reduce gender disparities in academic performance, retention, transition to upper grades, and participation in education activities.

There will be a greater focus on adolescent girls in upper primary grades, as it is known that girls are particularly vulnerable to dropping out of schools during that period. One of READ II’s gender activities is to support schools’ Gender Clubs.

READ II plans to create an activity book aiming to foster discussion around difficult topics, to inspire behavior change and activism, and to promote personal growth and a sense of community. The activity books will expand on the radio drama READ II is currently producing.

Activity Description

READ II is in the process of producing a 13-episode radio drama on youth and the prominent challenges they face to
remain in and succeed in school and become productive adults, namely around gender norms and roles, gender-based violence, female leadership, child marriage, and menstruation.

The radio drama will be used as a discussion piece in schools’ gender clubs. To accompany the radio drama, READ II will produce an activity book aiming to deepen the reflections and discussions around these important themes, but also to put these ideas into actions.

The activity book will have a series of activities around these themes that can be used in gender clubs and beyond.

It is envisioned that some activities will be around individual reflection, others around group participation and discussions, and others will focus on actions beyond gender clubs, taking the ideas to their schools, their homes, and their communities.

Reporting and Organizational Relationships:

Creator/Writer will report to the Senior Gender Advisor.

Position Summary:

READ II seeks an Activity Book Creator/Writer, who will be responsible for creating the activities and writing the content.

The Activity Book is estimated to be approximately 30-40 pages long, but packed with user-friendly (student-friendly) activities. The activity book will be written in English, then translated into seven languages, and validated by six Regional Education Bureaus.
