Org. Setting and Reporting

The Internship is located in the Population and Youth Section of the Social Development Policy Division (SDPD) at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa.

The internship is for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the Section for maximum of six (6) months.

The Social Development Policy Division consist of three sections, namely:

  • Social Protection Section
  • Population and Youth Section and
  • Urbanization Section and one centre, African Centre for Gender.

    The Population and Youth Section works towards enhancing the policy and strategic approaches of member states to integrate demographic changes and emerging population and youth issues into development policies and programmes, at both the national and regional levels.

    The focus of this internship will be to assist the Population and Youth Section in its work on the Demographic Dividend.

    The UNECA is mandated to promote the economic and social development of its member states, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development.

    Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Population and Youth Section and within delegated authority, the incumbent will carry out the following functions
  • Assist with compiling information and undertake research on policy issues in relation to population issues including the policy/normative framework as well as issues such as migration, demographic dividend, demographic transitions, determinants and consequences of population trends
  • Support data collection activities
  • Undertake desk review of bibliographies for the section's reports and proof read documents
  • Assist with organizing and convening meetings, including attending to all relevant preparations.
  • Perform other duties as might be assigned by the Chief of Section.

    Education

    To qualify for an internship under the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

    Applications must meet one of the following educational requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the United Nations Internship Programme.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the
    United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme.
  • Knowledge of the other official UN language is an asset.

  • The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
  • Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
