Org. Setting and Reporting
The Geospatial information Management Section (GiMS) of the African Centre for Statistics of ECA is seeking for an intern on geospatial information science and technology. The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the programme.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work for five days per week (35 hours) under overall guidance of the Chief, GiMS and the direct supervision of the Senior geospatial information officers of GiMS and other members of the Section.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Officer and the overall guidance of Chief, GiMS and the direct supervision of the Senior geospatial information officers, the selected intern will undertake the following assignments and support the accomplishment of the related tasks, including generating related write-ups and story lines. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Undertake research and activities in support of programmes/projects ongoing in the team.

• Support the GiMS Section with reviews including compiling critical information on key studies, project results and impacts; in particular the use of Earth Observation to delineate and incorporate urbanization spatial patterns and socio-infrastructure into a GIS database, assess African urban sprawls, etc.

• Prepare case studies, technical analyses, compiling statistics etc. for publications including scientific journals, newsletters, pamphlets, and communication material etc.

• Support the development of databases of ongoing projects on geodetic reference frame, national spatial data infrastructures, etc. and updating them with information from projects including results achieved, pictures, videos, news articles;

• Appraise the common standards and metadata that would make statistical and geospatial information more useable and more relevant to a wider range of stakeholders.

• Identify some of the best practices and experiences, and outline the guiding principles for adopting common standards in the mapping practices in Africa.

• Provide support to the organization of regional meetings and other geo-related events organized by ECA (UN-GGIM Session, Expert Groups meetings, etc)

• Assist in drafting and preparing official documents

• Working on geoportal development

• Perform any other duties as requested

    Education

  • To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working Languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of the other is an advantage.
