Economic Commission for Africa Intern - Data and Analytics Jobs in Ethiopia; This position is located in the Strategic Planning, Oversight and Results Division of the Economic Commission for Africa. The incumbent will be stationed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Chief of Section reports to the Director of Strategic Planning, Oversight and Results Division. Under the technical and managerial oversight of the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary- Programme Support and the Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Section, the intern will support ODES-PS and PRMS efforts to bolster data collection, visualization and dashboard creation to ensure compliance and efficiency of services.

This includes the following duties:

• Supports in reviewing existing datasets and planning tools of the ECA Programme Support Pillar and PRMS, compiles data and ensures performance reporting alignment with UNHQ management dashboard indicators and KPIs.

• Supports the development and establishment of databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical and operational efficiency and quality of the programme support pillar activities.

• Uses statistical and analytical tools, relational databases, and information management systems to interpret data sets.

• Under supervision, identifies, analyses, and communicates trends, patterns, and predictions using relevant data, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for decision-makers. Identifies weaknesses and suggests plans for strengthening the data ecosystem.

• Utilizes and supports the adoption of established glossaries, profiling and scanning processes for curating data, templates, performance data standards, best practices, and standard operating procedures.

• Understands requirements and supports implementation of data systems while remaining compliant with UNHQ’s results framework and reporting requirements and policies.

• Supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plan, including indicator selection, target setting, risk identification and treatment plans, tracking, and reporting.

• With guidance, prepares presentations of findings using a range of visualization tools and techniques, including dashboards, maps, charts, and/or infographics, to support data-driven planning, reporting and decision making.

• Conducts periodic data quality assessments to ensure the integrity and accuracy of M&E data. • Performs other duties, as needed.

Qualifications or special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

a) Be enrolled in, or have
completed, a graduate school programme (second-level university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

• Applicants who have graduated (as defined in (a) or (b) above), if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Languages

*English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

The intern is expected to:

• Have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

• No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.

  • Knowledge of one or more analytics and presentation tools (e.g., Power BI, Excel, Tableau, Infogram, PowerPoint, SQL, R, Python, SAS) is desirable.

  • Studies or a degree in analytics, economics, statistics, computer science, data science, engineering, information management, mathematics, statistics, geographic information systems, management or a related field is required.

  • Proven expertise and experience in data visualization and interpretation is desirable.

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to analyse a complex data and break it to simple data. Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated ability to manage competing tasks and workload.
