Org. Setting and Reporting

These positions are located at ECA's Security and Safety Service (SSS). Under the overall command of the Chief of SSS, the Security Sergeant is required to perform security functions and reports directly to the Security Lieutenant or supervising officer in the assigned working area.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Security Sergeant will be responsible for the following duties:

Performs a variety of security and safety duties by:

  • Responding promptly to security and safety incidents including thefts, accidents, fires and preparing reports on action taken.

  • Enforcing security and safety measures including screening of visitors into the compound checking the movement of persons within the premises to detect any unlawful entry or acts as well as the implementation and enforcement of fire prevention and fighting measures/precautions.

  • Monitoring traffic flow and enforcing parking regulations and reprimanding any violation as well as reporting such violations.

  • Briefs officers under command of possible security threats and related operational plans.

  • Making ground and building patrol inspection and conducting routine search to detect any suspicious acts or irregularities.

  • Taking investigation on reported incidents including interviewing and obtaining statements or complainants and witness, following up on going investigations, reviewing investigative reports as well as preparing reports

  • Participating in the development of Emergency Operation Plans and co-coordinating activities during emergency response back-up operation and recovery actions.

  • Assisting in organizing fire and general safety exercises covering preventive and protective measures including organizing fire and building evacuation drills.

  • Organizing tours of visitors to the complex including the Conference Center and enforcing the necessary security and safety checks.

  • Organizing Flag hoisting ceremonies.

  • Providing emergency First Aid assistance.

    Assists the Security Lieutenant in the general administration, monitoring and follow-up on assignments by giving daily wok instructions and direction to assigned sergeants and security officers.

  • Preparing correspondences and other reports as necessary.

  • Maintaining records and other information as required.

  • Counsels, coaches and mentors officers under command.

  • Provides input for the performance evaluation of security personnel under command.

  • Liaising with local security and law enforcement officers on security and safely
    incidents and other matters under investigation.

  • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.

  • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.

  • Acts in the absence of the Security Lieutenant.

  • Performs all other duties as required and instructed by the Chief.

The ability to perform analysis, modeling and interpretation of data in support of decision-making.

    Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional security, police or military training is required.

  • Passing the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT) administered at the Duty Station is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration for this post.

    Work Experience

  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in security work in military or police establishment with at least two (2) years at supervisory level is required.

  • The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.

  • Practical experience in UN security services operation combined with ability to lead a small tactical security unit is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For these positions advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
