About DRCDRC began operating in Kenya in 2005 with assistance to refugees and displacement-affected communities via implementation of protection and livelihoods activities.
DRC works in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, as well as in Nairobi and Mombasa to assist urban-based refugees, and in Mandera County implementing a 3-year cross-border resilience programme.
In Kakuma, DRC’s programme supports refugee youth and adolescents with life skills, resilience, training and scholarships alongside livelihood and vocational skills development.
DRC has recently acquired implementing partner status of UNHCR and will be implementing protection related activities in Kalobeyei camp – which is a new camp opened near the Kakuma refugee camp.
Overall purpose of the role:
The Protection Officer (Psychosocial Support) will support the successful coordination and implementation of all psychosocial activities, and will be responsible for the provision of quality case management.
In addition, the post holder will support training of partners, staff and community workers to respond to cases of GBV in all refugee camps in Dadaab, and ensure effective referrals and follow up of cases for survivors of GBV.
Responsibilities:
Case Management:
Support the maintenance of an effective and confidential case management system;
Ensure provision of professional and confidential services to survivors of GBV through a survivor-centered case management approach;
Develop professional, effective and appropriate GBV psychosocial programming, including direct individual and group counseling support;
Develop and ensure implementation of psychosocial activities that are responsive to the needs of refugee women, girls men & boys;
Maintain and update quality GBV Information Management System (IMS) database on a regular basis;
Collecting and analyzing data on GBV trends and work with partners to disseminate information to all relevant stakeholders to develop responses;
Assist with preparing all relevant reports regarding the DRC’s psychosocial activities;
Ensure timely implementation of psychosocial program activities;
Training and Capacity Development:
Mentor and provide technical support to staff and community workers directly involved with the psychosocial and care for GBV survivors;
Monitor and supervise case management, including capacity building through training and on-the-job training.
Training topics should include active listening and effective communication, action and safety planning, GBV guiding principles, GBV basic concepts, and other related topics;
Provide guidance regarding psychosocial activities to all partners and community workers to ensure all program activities meet best practice standards
Ensure program staff are trained on HAP Standards and mainstream HAP Principles in day-to-day project implementation.
Community Engagement and Outreach:
Strengthen and maintain networks with all partners including community leaders, women leaders, service providers to ensure that survivors receive compassionate support from the community and to encourage greater communication, collaboration and coordination among partners (protection, health, legal, and psychosocial sectors).
Support in conducting adolescent girls’ discussion sessions for girls in and out of school;
Enhance Conduct community mobilization on the uptake of counseling services and support other GBV staff in conducting GBV awareness sessions in the community;
Coordination & partnership:
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders, including community members
and leaders, NGOs, UN agencies, and other DRC team members to enhance multi-agency and multi-sectoral cooperation and coordination on response activities.
Maintain a strong working relationship with Health partners and other to support the provision of quality care to sexual assault survivors
Support the development and strengthening of an effective GBV referral system and coordination mechanisms in Ifo and Dagahaley camps.
Lead on bi-monthly case conferences and support GBV coordination meetings with partners and community members;
Fulfill any other duties and responsibilities as assigned;
Staff Supervision and Development:
Provide supervision to Protection Assistants (Psychosocial support) to ensure effective provision of counselling services;
Conduct continuous performance monitoring/evaluation for national staff working under him/her;
Provide leadership and intellectual guidance on the counselling program;
Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning:
Develop monitoring tools and collect relevant information related to Psychosocial support programs;
Prepare case studies and document project successes;
Participate in protection and Psychosocial well being related assessments.
Experience and technical competencies:
Three years’ hands on experience in counseling preferably with persons of concern;
Experience in a refugee setting and knowledge of refugee issues;
Good facilitation/training skills and project report writing skills;
Ability to communicate in a highly professional manner with clients, community members and professional partners;
Able to complete required reporting and documentation by deadlines;
Able to uphold high ethical and professional standards and maintain the highest levels of confidentiality;
Problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
Ability to promote the values of equality, non-discrimination, and human rights for all;
Motivated, innovative and possesses outstanding organizational and inter-personal skills and professional integrity;
Knowledge in gender issues and human rights;
Knowledge and understanding of Somali society;
Willing to work in a hardship area.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Counseling and/or Psychology/Sociology,
Master’s degree in the same fields is an added advantage;
Excellent knowledge of computer applications including MS Word, Excel, Power point;
Languages:
Fluent in English and Kiswahili languages;
Ability to communicate in the Somali language will be an added advantage;
