Role DescriptionYou will report to the Director General and will work hand in hand with the Uganda Country Director and office and the UK office. You will work closely with the Kenya Board and will support its successful operation.
General Responsibilities
In line with strategy, values and ethos you will implement the business plan and objectives . You will lead the organization in working interdependently with the rest of the APP community and in establishing a posture of hospitality and excellence internally and externally.
Specific Responsibilities
Organisational Development
Maintain regular communication and collaboration with the London office and other offices as appropriate.
Participate in the national legal fraternity when required, including participation on task forces, training courses and at conferences.
Ensuring relevant policies are in place, being followed and regularly reviewed.
Ensuring that safeguarding and lone working provisions are properly followed.
Ensuring correct data collection processes are followed, timely completion of the balanced scorecard, trends in data and organisational performance are analysed and acted upon.
Oversight of collective community building/spiritual formation activities including but not limited to: assemblies; meals together; lectio divina sessions; Taize worship.
Contribution to our Education Steering Group and a future Services Steering Group.
Programme Implementation
Manage and encourage co-operative relationships established with various legal institutions and ensure that these joint initiatives conform to programme objectives.
Ensure all programme activities are sensitive to and responsive to changes in the political, social and economic environments.
Financial Management & Control
Ensure that the control of expenditure and the disbursement of resources is in accordance with established procedures and maintain the financial and legal integrity of the organisation. This includes but is not limited to oversight of preparation of budgets, management account and statutory accounts.
Provide progress and financial reports as required by the government and APP’s accountability procedures and as required by other organisations.
Human Resource Development & Management
Maintain effective and appropriate staff/intern/volunteer recruitment, induction, appraisal, retention, remuneration (where appropriate) and development practice at all levels to ensure we have the right people and they are well cared for. This goes for our people in and out of prison.
Relationship with Kenyan Government
Ensure that appropriate legal agreements with the Kenyan Government are in place and that these are respected.
Establish, develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the Government, at all levels, including but not limited to: the prison service; the judiciary; the DPP; court users’ committees; the Law Society; the Council for Legal Education; the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee.
Fundraising & Communications
Ensure a continuous flow of information is available to support fundraising, including preparation of funding applications and reports to donors.
Ensure the fundraising team is kept informed of all programmatic developments.
Establish and develop working relationships with key donors and actively develop local funding source
Policy, Research & Advocacy Work
Encourage the development of appropriate research with a view to improving the quality of legal education and services.
Develop and manage a sound
relationship with all sections of the media and ensure that any published material accurately reflects the views of the organisation.
Emergency Preparedness
Develop and maintain appropriate contingency plans for all kinds of emergencies. Such plans to be presented for approval of the Line Manager for inclusion in Risk Management Policy and reports.
Other Requirements
Carry out other assignments as required by the Director General.

First-hand experience of prison/conflict with the law
Education in law or a related field
O Levels (or equivalent)
Experience
A track record of living in a way that is preferential to the poor
Ability to nurture and develop relationships with diverse groups.
Substantial experience in legal education, legal services, social services or a related field
A track record of living or working as part of a diverse community.
Understanding of gender issues in development and demonstrable commitment to promoting gender equity within the organisation and in programme work
Experience overseeing /administering high quality legal services
Experience working with a social enterprise (ideally doing legal work)
Experience leading spiritual formation activities.
Proven initiative, flexibility and enthusiasm in managing complex activities in a changing environment
Experience living and working in two or more of the countries in which APP operates (Uganda; Kenya; the UK)
A track record in leading and managing institutions/programmes associated with the law.
Skills/Abilities
Excellent management & leadership skills
A track record of building bridges between divergent groups.
An eye for detail. And the big picture.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing
Excellent skills in programme information
