Job Summary

The DAAS Platform Director position will be focused on serving as the strategic and technical coordinator in support of the ramp up and operationalization of our DAAS platform initiatives (or FarmStack) in Ethiopia.

The digital platform work will be done in partnership with Digital Green’s global strategy function, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, Government of Ethiopia, and our consortium of partners in the country.

This role will scope, design, and operationalize specific entry-point use cases in support of overall program objectives with support from the Ethiopia country office. This position reports to Digital Green- Ethiopia Country Director.

FarmStack provides a comprehensive solution in enabling public and private organizations work to support smallholder farmers by means of better coordination of approach, systems, and knowledge base through a digital platform that will use data and technology to integrate various components of the extension ecosystem.

FarmStack will aid in the development of large-scale dynamic farmer/ farm profiles by combining farmer profiles with localized, time-sensitive data and leveraging existing digital channels.

FarmStack will provide tailored content across multiple dissemination channels (e.g., video, IVR, SMS, radio) by linking data from public, private and civil society partners across the value chain and will facilitate improved services across the value chain and enable farmers to connect with input providers, financial service providers and markets so that they can not only increase yields but also incomes.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as Director for the Digital Platform project in Ethiopia utilizing technology and human-centered design to develop solutions in support of specific program objectives

Conduct a technology landscaping survey to determine existing data and content available within Ethiopia to aid in scoping out the digital platform direction

Gather information related to specific entry point cases and develop and implement the digital platform strategy for each with support from internal team members and the technology team

In partnership with the Country Director, liaise with government partners, research partners, technology team, and internal team members to scope out specific entry point use cases in support of the development of the digital platform efforts in Ethiopia

In partnership with the Country Director and Director of Strategy, provide strategic vision and support to ramp up on the digital platform project implementation

In partnership with the M&E Director, monitor the implementation of the entry point use cases and recommend course corrections as needed to ensure alignment with identified strategic objectives and success criteria

Provide regular updates to the Ethiopian Leadership Group on the progress of the ramp up and proactively seek support in managing potential issues that arise

Periodically produce project progress projects for the donor and DG’s internal use

Coordinate partnerships with consortium members and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and commitment towards the digital platform project objectives

Liaise with similar projects and initiatives implemented by other organizations that are funded by BMGF and other donors (DFID, GIZ, FAO, World Bank, etc.) to facilitate alignments and synergy with FarmStack

Represent Digital Green’s interests and provide thought leadership to donors and FarmStack consortium members around the digital platform strategy

Proactively identify issues and risks related to program implementation and suggest relevant course corrections

Provide timely support and guidance to the consortium members and ensure that they are meeting the overall strategic objectives identified for the entry point cases and in ongoing implementation activities

Ensure that the Country Director and Director of Strategy are apprised of the developments and progress within the consortium members and surface any potential issues that need to be addressed.

Job Requirements

Skills and Experience

Master’s degree in international development, business, ICT, agriculture or relevant field of study

A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible work experience in Ethiopia;

Experience in people management, managing projects of multiple partnership nature, working across multiple time zones and with people from diverse culture;

Experience in using data science and practices to inform data analysis and reporting;

Experience in using technology and digital resources to support value chain development; preferably agriculture-focused;

Experience with using human-centered design principles to develop interventions in support of program objective.
