GIZ-Internal/External Vacancy Announcement #158/2018
GIZ-GIC
In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on commission of the Ethiopian Government and International Donors.
Green Innovation Center
The Green Innovation Centre (GIC) supports the Ethiopian government with the development of the agricultural sector to improve the food supply chain, foster income generation opportunities and target employment creation.
The focal area of the project is to support and improve the wheat and faba bean value chains through the promotion of modern agricultural technologies, tailored trainings in Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), high quality seeds and agricultural inputs as well as agro-processing and marketing.
The GIC implements its activities in the so called Ethiopian Wheat Belt in Oromia, with the following four fields of action:
(1). Increasing productivity and profitability through sustainable dissemination of innovations: The key element of the GIC is to enable smallholder farmers to utilize innovative technologies like crop rotation and adapted agricultural mechanisation, to follow Good Agricultural Practices and to utilize high quality inputs in order to enhance their on-farm productivity and profitability. GIC works with cooperatives and unions to promote GAP by providing trainings and on farm demonstrations.
(2). Strengthening services for sustainable use of innovations for smallholder farmers: Currently, the Arsi-Zone is marked by the lack of modernized and high-quality seeds.
Therefore, the aim of GIC is to increase seed multiplication initiatives, to increase seed availability and to improve the framework conditions of the seed production.
This is ensured in cooperation with the Kulumsa Agricultural Research Centre (KARC), the Oromia Seed Enterprise and through Seed Producing Cooperatives (SPCs) who are core partners for multiplying seeds and distributing them to designated farmers.
(3). Strengthening up- and downstream enterprises of the wheat and faba bean value chains: This increases the value addition of the supply chain by supporting important companies involved, such as agricultural input providers and agro processing manufacturers and industries.
Agricultural input often lacks in terms of qualitative and quantitative availability and is frequently applied with limited knowledge and unsafe practices.
Farm Service Centres (FSCs) aim at providing high quality inputs while qualifying and certifying smallholder farmers for a sustainable application of fertilizers and pesticides.
The GIC supports the establishment of FSCs, piloted by young entrepreneurs, in the Arsi-Zone.
Through establishing FSCs, GIC supports the region improve the accessibility and availability of high quality inputs and provide centres for training and knowledge dissemination.
(4). Strengthening vocational training and education centres in mechanisation and GAP for extension services: GIC supports two national ATVET colleges under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources to revise
