Job descriptionThis post is an exciting opportunity to work in our dynamic team based in Nairobi, to conduct thorough field investigation, to engage with a large range of stakeholders locally and internationally, and will provide training and coaching opportunities to develop the post holder's full range of skills.
The Analyst will undertake research and draft reports and other forms of shorter publication which examine and propose solutions to prevent or mitigate deadly conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and throughout the Great Lakes Region, including consideration of security, political, legal, governance, human rights, gender and social issues.
For the first year the analyst will be expected to focus primarily on Eastern DRC, taking into account cross border and international aspects of conflict and conflict prevention. The appointment for this role is foreseen for January 2019.
Specific responsibilities:
Conducts extensive field research into prevailing issues in both Eastern DRC and Burundi, including - where relevant - consideration of security, political, legal, economic and social issues as well as human rights, gender and governance; develop a strong network of contacts throughout the great lakes region to support analysis.
Provides written analyses - in clear and concise fashion - of the risks and origins of deadly conflict in the region in the form of detailed reports and briefing papers for publication as well as shorter derivatives (such as podcasts and op-eds);
Proposes policy recommendations and initiatives for conflict actors including political, civil society and other stakeholders at the national
as well as regional and international levels aimed at preventing, mitigating or resolving conflict;
Provides support to the Senior Analyst and Project Director for Crisis Group activities and advocacy in the region and globally.
Requirements
Qualification, preferably post-graduate, in international relations, political science, social sciences or other relevant field of academic study;
Three to five years of professional experience in the field of conflict research, analysis and prevention, working in government, academia, international organisations, non-governmental organisations or the media;
Demonstrated excellent writing skills;
Strong research and analytical skills, and proven experience of formulating persuasive policy recommendations;
Extensive knowledge of Eastern DRC and Burundi and public policy issues, and experience of living and working in the region;
Fluency in French and English;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public presentation skills;
Experience of working successfully within a team as well as the ability to work independently in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
